The town of Ashland has recently been dealing with a massive pest problem in the form of wasps and hornets. The insects, including paper wasps, yellow jackets and hornets, have taken over a part of the downtown area over the past week, forcing officials to cordon off a small park on Front Street and call in outside help from a pest control company.“I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Ashland DPW Director Doug Small in an interview on Monday. The aggressive wasps, which unlike bees, can sting multiple times and survive, have stung at least two people in recent days.“These are all naturally territorial wasps, so this is expected,” said Ashland Conservation Agent Becca Soloman. “They’re just a little more aggressive than we would like to see in a public space.A pest control company sprayed a green-friendly insecticide in the affected area on Friday. But that did little to stop the wasps. On Monday, the company was back to spray again. Though they looked in trees an...Mets Notebook: Edwin Diaz hopes to pitch this season after torn patellar tendon

Edwin Diaz has a goal in sight: He wants to pitch this season.Whether or not his right knee will cooperate is another story, but so far his rehab from a torn patellar tendon is going so smoothly that the Mets closer is eying a late September return.“The goal is I want to pitch this year,” Diaz said Monday, speaking to reporters for the first time since April. “But I’ve got all the checkmarks to check off and we have to see what’s coming up.”A typical timeline for a return is six-to-eight months. September would put the 29-year-old right around the six-month mark. Diaz is still a few weeks off from having to make a decision, but he hopes to hit enough rehab benchmarks to be able to return before the final game of the season in October.Diaz hit a major benchmark Sunday when he threw his first outdoor bullpen. He didn’t face hitters, but he did throw off a mound to a catcher. It was the first time he pitched in a scenario that might mimic a gam...Healey issues statement in response to wave of weekend gun violence

Gov. Maura Healey responded to a rash of gun violence seen across the state over the weekend by issuing a statement and pointing to a small infusion of federal funds her administration has directed to violence prevention programs. On Saturday, eight people were shot in Boston after two men opened fire on each other just as a parade heralding the city’s annual Caribbean Carnival was taking place. In Worcester, a similar event was shuttered early on Sunday after an adult and a child were struck by bullets fired by a pair of mutual assailants. The governor also addressed recent violence in Springfield. Will the state’s efforts to curb Storrowing actually work this move-in season? The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation has been on a full-court press ahead of move-in day on Sept. 1 — trying to get the word out so people moving their couches and beds in U-Haul trucks don’t slam into low-clearance bridges and overpasses on Storrow Drive, Soldiers Field Road, and Memorial Drive. In addition to a funny social media campaign, DCR on Monday put up a new, more visible and durable “Cars Only” sign on David G. Mugar Way.“This year DCR has expanded our efforts to ensure the public knows about low bridge clearances on our river roads to ensure that we can safely welcome students back to school and new residents to the area,” said DCR Commissioner Brian Arrigo.“We have implemented a pilot program to test out new, more visible and durable signage on Mugar Way and to warn people of the dangers of driving box trucks on low clearanc...A healthier Andrew Benintendi has been showcasing power for the Chicago White Sox

I’ll strike out?’” Benintendi said Saturday. “So I might as well try something and I ended up hitting a double.”He sliced a 98 mph fastball to left field on a 1-2 pitch for the double.“I think it kind of clicked right there,” Benintendi said. “Don’t want to jinx it or anything, but going to keep trying to ride it out.”Benintendi has been in a good rhythm at the plate, including showing some more power.
