At least eight people were killed when two suspected smuggling boats approached a San Diego beach and one capsized, and crews are searching Sunday for an estimated seven additional victims, authorities said.A woman on one of the panga-style boats called 911 late Saturday to report that the other vessel had overturned in waves off Blacks Beach, according to U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Richard Brahm.“The woman who called stated that the boat that overturned had 15 people on it, but that was just an estimate,” Brahm said.Coast Guard and San Diego Fire-Rescue crews pulled eight bodies from the water, but thick fog hampered the search for additional victims. A Coast Guard cutter combed the area early Sunday, and officials hoped to get helicopters in the air when weather improves, Brahm said.Daniel Eddy, San Diego Fire-Rescue’s deputy chief of operations, said there was a long debris field on Black’s Beach. (iSeeCars) -- The U.S. transportation sector is in the midst of an aggressive push to replace fossil fuels and the internal combustion engine with renewable energy and zero emissions electric vehicles. Government incentives have recently been updated to encourage not only the sale of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), but increased domestic production of battery packs, electric motors, and EV charging stations. While the desire to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change is admirable, analysis of a gasoline vehicle’s total environmental impact must be compared to an electric vehicle’s complete carbon footprint to understand which vehicle design is truly better for the planet. Zero tailpipe emissions are the most obvious advantages electric cars have over gasoline cars, but if the power plant charging an EV isn’t using renewable energy sources the electric vehicle’s low-carbon advantage falls dramatically. The manufacturing process – along with the eventual destruction ...Authorities: 8 dead, 7 missing off San Diego coast

More danger is looming

Evacuation shelters continued to fill early Sunday morning in areas near the Pajaro River, where a breached levee has forced thousands of people, many of them farmworkers, to flee from flood waters. And in the distance, another atmospheric river continued with Jaws-like relentlessness to push toward the California coast. Its projected path was expected to further affect the flooded areas, and perhaps create new ones.“We’re keeping a close eye on the Salinas River,” Monterey County spokesperson Nicholas Pasculli said Sunday morning. “That’s a big concern for us (Sunday).”A flood warning went into effect at 1 a.m. for the Salinas River near Spreckels, and residents there were urged to be prepared to seek higher ground. The river is a rare one is that it flows south to north, and Pasculli said areas along the river from Greenfield to the south and Gonzales in the north may be in peril. As of Sunday morning, 3,400 people were under evacuation orders or ...Treasury Secretary Yellen: No federal bailout for collapsed Silicon Valley Bank

By CHRIS MEGERIAN (Associated Press)WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Sunday that the federal government would not bail out Silicon Valley Bank, but is working to help depositors who are concerned about their money. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation insures deposits up to $250,000, but many of the companies and wealthy people who used the bank — known for its relationships with technology startups and venture capital — had more than that amount in their account. There are fears that some workers across the country won’t receive their paychecks.Yellen, in an interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation,” provided few details on the government’s next steps. But she emphasized that the situation was much different from the financial crisis almost 15 years ago, which led to bank bailouts to protect the industry.“We’re not going to do that again,” she said. “But we are concerned about depositors, and we’re focused on trying to meet their needs.”With Wall Street ...Latest news
