BALTIMORE (AP) — Adley Rutschman homered for the second straight game, Kyle Gibson earned his third victory in as many starts with Baltimore, and the Orioles defeated the Oakland Athletics 5-1 on Monday night.Ryan Mountcastle and Austin Hays also went deep for Baltimore, which improved to 4-0 in series openers this season. The long balls coincided with the Orioles debuting a dugout celebration in which each player who homered took a drink from a hose attached to a funnel.“We want to make sure it’s rebranded a little bit: It’s a homer hose, not a dong bong,” Gibson said. “It’s a homer hose, just like as a kid you go out back and you take a drink from the water hose after you play outside playing Wiffle ball.”Oakland has lost five in a row and fell to a majors-worst 2-8, matching its worst start since 2010. The A’s have scored one run in their last three games and just 28 on the season.“We only scored one run,” Oakland manager Mark Kotsay said. “At the end of the day, offensively we di...Murphy’s 2-run homer in 10th powers Braves past Reds, 5-4

WASHINGTON (AP) — Shaking their heads in the aftermath of a baffling defeat to a team out of contention, New York Islanders players lacked the answers to explain the inexplicable. What captain Anders Lee called a “horrible” start led to two goals in 63 seconds and another before the end of the first period, and the Islanders couldn’t climb out of the hole they dug. The result was a 5-2 loss to the Washington Capitals on Monday night that deals a significant blow to their playoff chances, which they no longer control with one game left to play.“That is disappointing when you’re in a spot where you win a couple and you’re in,” veteran winger Zach Parise said. “Now we need help, so hopefully we get it.”New York trails Florida by one point in the standings after the Panthers lost in overtime to Toronto on a goal by former Islanders captain John Tavares. The pharmaceutical market is a strange beast. It’s governed by a complex system of rules that protect new branded drugs from unbranded rivals for a limited period of time, in order to keep these cheaper generic competitors at bay.But measures such as patents, market exclusivity and data protection — designed to give pharma companies the chance to recoup investment in a new drug — are being exploited by some Big Pharma to keep competitors out of the market far beyond the intended fixed period of around 15 years, argues the generics sector. Gaming the system is so common that it even has a name: Evergreening. It can add billions of euros to pharmaceutical companies’ balance sheets, and cost EU countries significantly in missed savings. Big Pharma strongly denies wrongdoing, but in a 2009 report, the European Commission highlighted the need for stronger enforcement of competition laws to prevent evergreening. However, little has changed. Now, the leaked draft of the EU’s pharmaceutical l...Fast-spreading fire tears through Manchester, NH home

By ELAINE KURTENBACH (AP Business Writer)Stocks were mostly higher in Asia on Tuesday after a mixed session on Wall Street dominated by speculation the Federal Reserve may tap the brakes again on financial markets and the economy by raising interest rates. Shares rose in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul and Shanghai. U.S. futures edged higher and oil prices also gained. Monday was the first U.S. trading day after the release of data showing a stronger than expected jobs market in March, which might keep inflation high. That has reinforced expectations the Fed may hike interest rates again at its next meeting. In Japan, the new central bank governor indicated late Monday that he expects to keep its ultra-low interest rate policy in place without drastic changes. Bank of Japan Gov.
