By Clare Duffy | CNNFacebook users who had an active account at any point between May 2007 and December 2022 can now apply to receive a piece of parent company Meta’s $725 million settlement related to the Cambridge Analytica scandal.Meta in December agreed to the payment to settle a longstanding class action lawsuit accusing it of allowing Cambridge Analytica and other third parties to access private user information and misleading users about its privacy practices. The legal battle began four years ago, following an international outcry from the company’s disclosure that the private information of as many as 87 million Facebook users was obtained by Cambridge Analytica, a data analytics firm that worked with the Trump campaign. The California judge overseeing the case granted preliminary approval of the settlement late last month, and Facebook users can now apply for a cash payment as part of a settlement. The claim form — which requires a few personal details and informa...

How renters will be protected when Oakland’s eviction ban ends in July

Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 20:24:07 GMT

OAKLAND — Property owners can once again kick out tenants for failure to pay rent starting July 15, a hard-fought compromise end date to the city’s COVID-era ban on evictions.Just before midnight Tuesday, the council voted 6-1 to sunset the pandemic-era policy, though, crucially, it added permanent “just cause” protections to keep tenants from being evicted in droves this summer on flimsy pretenses.Nikki Fortunato Bas, the council’s president and author of the legislation, said she hoped it would meet “our broader goals of housing stability, of homelessness prevention and certainty about the end of the moratorium.”Tenants will not owe “back rent” for what went unpaid in the time since the eviction moratorium first took effect in March 2020, so long as they can demonstrate financial losses due to COVID. And landlords can’t remove a tenant who owes less than a month of what’s considered fair rent for an equivalent unit ...

El aumento del nivel del mar puede haber obligado a los vikingos a abandonar un asentamiento exitoso

Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 20:24:07 GMT

Tesla cuts U.S. prices again ahead of 1Q earnings release

DETROIT (AP) — Tesla dropped the starting prices for its two top-selling models overnight, the company’s fourth price cut in the U.S. this year. The company lopped $3,000, or about 6%, off the starting prices for all three versions of the Model Y small SUV, Tesla’s top-seller. It also cut $2,000, or about 5%, from the starting price of a version of the Model 3 small sedan.Tesla could have cut the Model 3 prices to make more cars loaded with options eligible for the U.S. government’s $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit. With options, some Model 3s would exceed the government’s $55,000 price limit for cars to be eligible for the credit. But some industry analysts say demand may be slowing for the company’s vehicles as more competition enters the market. Others say Tesla is using its high profit margins to take market share from competitors. Before the opening bell Wednesday, shares of Tesla Inc. slid more than 3%. After major declines last year, the company&...

Defunct NASA spacecraft returns to Earth after 21 years

Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 20:24:07 GMT

(CNN) — A NASA satellite that observed solar flares and helped scientists understand the sun’s powerful bursts of energy will fall to Earth this week, almost 21 years after it was launched. The retired Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) spacecraft, which launched in 2002 and was decommissioned in 2018, is expected to reenter Earth’s atmosphere Wednesday at approximately 9:30 p.m. ET, according to NASA.The agency expects most of the 660-pound spacecraft to burn up as it travels through the atmosphere, but some components are expected to survive reentry. The risk of harm coming to anyone on Earth as a result of RHESSI’s return is low — approximately 1 in 2,467, according to NASA.The spacecraft was equipped with an imaging spectrometer, which recorded the sun’s X-rays and gamma rays. From its former perch in low-Earth orbit, the satellite captured images of high-energy electrons that carry a large part of the energy released in so...

Washington bill would allow transgender medical procedures for minors without parental consent

OLYMPIA, Washington (KPTV) — A Washington state law that would remove parents’ ability to intervene in their children’s medical care in some circumstances cleared the House, paving the road for Gov. Jay Inslee to approve it.“An act relating to supporting youth,” or Senate Bill 5599, allows host homes for runaway youth “to house youth without parental permission.” Furthermore, the host homes do not need to notify parents about where their kids are or if they are getting medical interventions “if there is a compelling reason not to, which includes a youth seeking protected health services.”The “protected health care services” included “gender-affirming care,” which for minors arbitrarily included anything prescribed by a doctor to treat dysphoria, the bill obtained by FOX 13 Seattle said.“Gender-affirming treatment can be prescribed to two-spirit, transgender, nonbinary, and other gender diverse individuals,” the bill stated. For minors, “affirming care” typically included pubert...

Brussels wants to help Eastern countries shift Ukrainian grain

Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 20:24:07 GMT

BRUSSELS — The European Commission looks set to give in to some demands from Eastern EU member countries and will offer to help them move surplus Ukrainian grain currently stuck on their territories, while keeping open the possibility of imposing tariffs on agricultural products at a later stage, it said Wednesday. The announcement comes as Brussels scrutinizes restrictions imposed by Poland, Hungary and Slovakia on Ukrainian produce in response to a supply glut resulting from Russia’s war of aggression and delays to exports through the Black Sea. Bulgaria also imposed restrictions Wednesday and Romania is considering following suit.Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the five countries saw a “thousand-fold” increase in Ukrainian agricultural products spilling over into their territories, a senior EU official said, with wheat imports to Poland increasing from 2,800 tons in 2021 to 500,000 tons in 2022. Other Eastern EU countries have seen similar trends, the official added....
