Aurora sues Denver over 2020 protest lawsuits AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — If Aurora helped Denver police the 2020 protests, which city is responsible for the lawsuits that followed? That's the crux of a new lawsuit filed Friday in Denver District Court. It pits Aurora against Denver over liability in the 2020 protest response, when some protesters suffered severe injuries at the hands of police. Aurora and its police officers were named as co-defendants in at least a handful of those claims."Aurora has repeatedly asked Denver to confirm that it will indemnify Aurora or otherwise assume responsibility for these claims as required by state law and the parties' longstanding practice and agreement," the lawsuit claims. "Denver has refused, and so Aurora now seeks a declaration establishing that Denver does in fact have that obligation." The city's massive law enforcement response brought in o...

Triton ace Emma Penniman quiets North Reading’s bats in 3-0 win NORTH READING — There are some wins during a season that mean more than others. For the Triton softball team, Friday’s 3-0 win over North Reading squarely fit into that category. Not only did the Vikings (13-1) beat the only team that had defeated them this season but they also assumed control of their destiny in the Cape Ann League’s Kinney Division.“It was a little bit of a revenge win for us since they got us at our place the first time around,” Triton coach Al Noyes said. “North Reading is a good team and we’re a good team.”It didn’t hurt that Noyes’ ace, Emma Penniman, was dominant in the circle.Penniman put the shackles on a potent North Reading (10-3) lineup as she was almost perfect. Caitlin Reilly’s two infield singles were the only blemishes on Penniman brilliant outing. In all, Penniman struck out six, eclipsing the 100 mark for the year, and went to a three ball count just once.“Emma has just been lights out this season,” Noyes said. “She’s got an ERA under one now.”North...

Illinois legislators take another stab at Bears stadium legislation, with just a week to go in session With one week remaining in the Illinois legislature’s spring session, a revised version of proposed legislation to aid the Chicago Bears’ move to Arlington Heights has surfaced in Springfield.Like the previous proposal, the new bill would freeze the property tax assessment on the former Arlington International Racecourse, where the Bears have proposed a new stadium as part of a $5 billion mixed-use development, and create a $3 admission tax to help pay off debt incurred to fund renovations of Soldier Field two decades ago.Among the changes in the new bill are a restructured oversight board that would approve incentive agreements with the Bears. The bill would make state lawmakers nonvoting members of the panel, and also removes language that would have given the board zoning authority over the site. The latest version also tweaks a proposal to share revenue generated on the site from state sales tax, hotel tax and liquor taxes and a new 3% surcharge on sports betting reve...

Mets Notebook: Max Scherzer throws bullpen, Justin Verlander set for Citi Field debut WASHINGTON — Max Scherzer had what the Mets described as a “strenuous” workday Friday, which was a positive indicator for the right-hander and his management of neck spasms. The right-hander threw a 30-pitch bullpen at Nationals Park and is on track to start Sunday against the Washington Nationals. But while the neck spasms might be under control right now, the issue doesn’t appear to be a one-time thing. Scherzer has had to manage the issue throughout his career and will continue to in an effort to prevent them as best he can.“I can get these neck episodes from time to time and I felt like I was doing everything to prevent this,” Scherzer said Friday before the Mets opened a four-game series in Washington. “They can just come out of nowhere sometimes and that’s what happened.”Scherzer maintains that the spasms were somewhat random and continually emphasized that they can be.“I do a good amount of neck exercises, kind of som...
