Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 21:52:25 GMT

SACRAMENTO — Moses Moody couldn’t remember the last time he missed a shot. That’s because it had been a while. His last miss was last week on a 3-point shot against the Phoenix Suns 10 minutes into the third quarter. In two games since then, Moody has gone 8-for-8 from the field and 4-for-4 from 3 in 30 combined minutes. His hand couldn’t have been hotter at a better time on Tuesday night: with the Sacramento Kings closing in fast on the Warriors’ 24-point lead in the fourth quarter, Moody was making the Kings’ defense pay for throttling Steph Curry and Klay Thompson from beyond the arc and sunk four open shots in seven minutes to create some separation. Then Andrew Wiggins trotted to the scorers’ table and, in a second, Moody was back on the bench to put his hot hand on ice. The team’s traditional starting five closed the game and lost it, 124-123, on a pair of bad turnovers from Steph Curry and Draymond Green.“We needed to get Wig...

(BCN) -- On Tuesday, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved a charter amendment that would fund and require the hiring of new cops. They will put it before voters in March."The proposed measure provides voters with a chance to express whether they desire more police presence," said Supervisor Catherine Stefani, who voted for the measure along with Supervisors Myrna Melgar, Connie Chan, Shamann Walton and Aaron Peskin. It was sponsored by Supervisor Ahsha Safai."We don't have to pass a new tax for this to be meaningful," said Stefani, adding that her goal would be to redirect dollars from existing tax funds, "which I think is very doable."If the voters approve a future tax to supply additional revenue to fund the cost of employing more full duty sworn officers, then the city will set a minimum staffing number for the next five years. That number would begin with 1,700 officers the first year and increase each year until it hits a maximum of 2,074. Sister of accused Bob Lee...

In the Europa League, finishing in first place ensures a team skips a round of games. The eight group winners earn a direct place in the last 16 of the competition whereas finishing in second place only gets a team a playoff match against the clubs who drop into the Europa League as third-place finishers in Champions League groups. This season, that could easily be the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United or Newcastle. BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — The North American wolverine will receive long-delayed federal protections under a Biden administration proposal released Wednesday in response to scientists warning that climate change will likely melt away the rare species’ snowy mountain refuges.Across most of the U.S., wolverines were wiped out by the early 1900s from unregulated trapping and poisoning campaigns. About 300 surviving animals in the contiguous U.S. live in fragmented, isolated groups at high elevations. In the coming decades, warming temperatures are expected to shrink the mountain snowpack wolverines rely on to dig dens where they birth and raise their young. The decision Wednesday by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service follows more than two decades of disputes over the risks of climate change, and threats to the long-term survival of the elusive species. The animals resemble a small bear and are the world’s largest species of terrestrial weasels. They are sometimes called “mountain devils” for...

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Keep an eye on Lois Openda. On a night when Erling Haaland set yet another scoring record, Openda announced himself on the big stage with two goals at the home of the European champions. Manchester City recovered from going 2-0 down against Leipzig in the Champions League on Tuesday to win 3-2 and Haaland became the fastest player to score 40 goals in the competition. But Openda’s performance is likely to have earned him admiring glances from rival clubs.“He just came to Leipzig. I think he stays a little bit longer. That’s what I hope,” said his coach Marco Rose, who is used to losing his most talented players. One of those was defender Josko Gvardiol, who left for City in the offseason in a deal worth $99.2 million. But the Croatia international could do nothing when Openda took the ball past him in the first half to score his second goal of the match. He made similar light work of Manuel Akanji and Ruben Dias in the buildup for each of his goals. ...
