Chicago mother sues city after murder charges were dropped against her and her son CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago mother who was accused of telling her teen son to shoot a man at a fast food restaurant is suing the city and arresting officers, a day after murder charges against her and her son were dropped. Carlishia Hood, 35, was held on $3 million bail after she was charged last week with first-degree murder and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She was released Monday from the Cook County Jail.The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office said it was unable to “meet our burden of proof in the prosecution of these cases.”“I’ve experienced pain in many ways that I would never have thought,” she said about her arrest. ”What happened to me was totally unnecessary. Ascension Seton Medical Center nurses on strike Tuesday AUSTIN (KXAN) — Nurses at Ascension Seton Medical Center in Austin began a one-day strike Tuesday morning "to protest management's resistance to bargain in good faith."The group of unionized registered nurses said this will be the largest nurse strike in Texas history. This effort is part of contract negotiations the union said will improve the health of their patients and communities. A group of Ascension Seton nurses voted to unionize in September, joining the National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United. The union said it represents about 900 nurses, and 98% of those nurses voted to authorize the Tuesday strike. The strike started at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday and will last 24 hours excluding a three-hour heat break in the afternoon. LIVE: Travis County data shows drug overdose deaths higher among people leaving jail AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Tuesday, Travis County leaders will discuss data from the 2022 Medical Examiner's report that shows more than 20% of accidental overdose deaths were people who had been in jail less than a year prior. According to the county, the data showed 89 of the 417 people who died of an accidental drug overdose in 2022 had been in jail at least once within 12 months of their death. According to staff, 24 of those people had been flagged for needing mental health treatment in the jail during their last jail stay. The county noted that means someone in our county is more than eight times more likely to die of an accidental drug overdose after being directly released from jail compared to those who had not. Staff also said overall, people with shorter stays at the jail were more likely to later die of an accidental overdose after their release. One year since 53 migrants died in tractor-trailer abandoned in San Antonio SAN ANTONIO, Texas (KXAN) — Federal prosecutors are expected to share an update Tuesday afternoon marking one year since the deadliest human smuggling incident in the country's history. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Texas will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. in San Antonio, which is where authorities found a tractor-trailer carrying migrants abandoned near an auto salvage yard last year. In total, 53 people died, including children. Almost a dozen others suffered injuries because of the sweltering conditions. Rensselaer City Police investigating church burglary RENSSELAER, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Rensselaer City Police are currently investigating a burglary that took place at the St. John Evangelist and St. Joseph's Church on Herrick Street between 2:30 p.m. Sunday and 8:45 a.m. Monday. Police say an unknown suspect or suspects attempted to gain entry into the church's safe but were unsuccessful.
