AUSTIN (Nexstar) — After five months of discord and a short-lived special session, top Republican leaders remain at a tense impasse over how best to lower property taxes. Here's a look at the two competing proposals and who could stand to win and lose.Tax rate compressionThe Texas House passed legislation Tuesday to spend $12.3 billion on "compression." That simply means the state would buy down school district property tax rates and foot the bill for the taxpayer. Combined with the approved state budget, the House plan would dedicate $17.6 billion to lower local tax rates by another sixteen cents. Currently, school tax rates for maintenance and operations are $0.91 per every $100 of a home's valuation. House Bill 1 of the first special session would drop that to $0.64 next year. The House swiftly passed this plan with the endorsement of Gov. Greg Abbott and more than 30 business groups."This is a plan that we feel like is equitable. It doesn't pick winners or losers. After turning heads earlier this month during rookie minicamp, receiver Jordan Addison has spent all of organized team activities to this point watching from the sidelines. He’s dealing with an undisclosed injury right now, though coach Kevin O’Connell downplayed the severity of it on Tuesday after the Vikings wrapped up at TCO Performance Center.“We’re being overly cautious with him right now,” O’Connell said. “Just something that popped up towards the tail end of rookie minicamp. Nothing serious at all.”If this was the middle of the regular season, Addison, who the Vikings selected with the No. 23 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, would more than likely be playing through whatever pain he’s feeling. That said, there’s simply no reason for the 5-foot-11, 175-pound receiver to push things at the moment, especially with training camp right around the corner. Why risk worsening things during voluntary workouts?“As far as I...Race to remember fallen local soldier on Memorial Day

ST. LOUIS – Andy Welle, co-owner of Thies Farm, does not need to look at May’s rainfall totals to know our area is experiencing mild drought conditions."It's been a struggle this year,” Welle said. "It's been the driest spring as far as I can remember in the 40 years I've been working here."Data from the most recent United States drought monitor map shows St. Louis, Jefferson, Franklin, St. Charles, and Warren counties all experiencing abnormally dry conditions. In May, there's been just an inch-and-a-half of measurable rainfall, the second lowest amount in 30 years. In April, rainfall totals were also well below average."Over the years, we've been purchasing all kinds of irrigation equipment so that when we get into these times, we can keep the waters running,” Welle said. What happens in the underbelly of Ball Arena stays in the underbelly of Ball Arena. At least, that’s how Jimmy Butler prefers it.“I think there’s a lot of stuff about the whole situation that people don’t understand, and I’ll let it stay back there,” Butler said Wednesday, referring to the Denver hallways where a near-brawl occurred between the Heat and the Nuggets on Nov. 8, 2021.He does, however, want to set the record straight about one detail. The postgame confrontation, captured in a Denver Post photo, stemmed from a heated incident in the fourth quarter of a Nuggets blowout win. After Nikola Jokic was blindsided by Miami’s Markieff Morris while dribbling the ball up the floor, the MVP retaliated by checking Morris from behind. An injured Morris missed the next 58 games and appeared in only 35 this season.Benches cleared, Nuggets coach Michael Malone held back Jokic, and television cameras caught Butler inviting further conflict as the in...Latest news
