California will pay a $24 million civil rights settlement to the family of a man who died in police custody after screaming “I can't breathe” as multiple officers restrained him while trying to take a blood sample, lawyers said Tuesday. Seven California Highway Patrol officers and a nurse were charged with involuntary manslaughter earlier this year in connection with the 2020 death of Edward Bronstein, age 38. Annee Della Donna and Eric Dubin, attorneys for Bronstein's young children, said it's the largest civil rights settlement of its kind by the state of California, and the second largest nationally since the city of Minneapolis paid $27 million in the George Floyd case. The attorneys scheduled a news conference in Los Angeles for Wednesday to provide details. The settlement comes amid renewed scrutiny of potentially fatal restraints following last week's death of a New York City subway rider, Jordan Neely, who was placed in a chokehold by a U.S. Marine veteran. Bronstein's death...Man convicted for inappropriately touching sleeping woman on L.A.-bound flight

A 49-year-old man from Pomona was found guilty by a federal jury for the felony offense of intentionally touching the inner thigh of a woman sleeping next to him on a flight to Los Angeles, authorities announced Tuesday. The incident occurred on Feb. 17, 2020, after Mohammad Jawad Ansari boarded a flight at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport that was bound for LAX, according to a news release from the United States Attorney’s Office. Ansari was seated by the window in the tenth row of the plane while the victim occupied the middle seat. According to evidence presented at the four-day trial, the victim, who was wearing a dress, fell asleep not long after the flight took off with the armrest separating her from the 49-year-old man. “At some point during the flight to Los Angeles, Ansari placed his left hand on the victim’s right knee and knowingly, intentionally, and without the victim’s consent, moved his hand to her inner thigh,” the release stated. “The person sit...Warriors coach Steve Kerr doubles down on flopping comment after Game 4 loss

SAN FRANCISCO — Steve Kerr didn’t get much sleep Monday night. How could he?Kerr had a lot on his mind after the Warriors squandered a seven-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter of Game 4 . They had opportunities down the stretch to pull off a series-tying win, but couldn’t catch a break, resulting in a tough 104-101 loss in Los Angeles. In the immediate aftermath of the defeat that put the Warriors in a 3-1 series hole and on the brink of elimination, Kerr said he thought the Lakers “took some flops and were rewarded” down the stretch. “I’ll have to see the replays. Maybe I’m wrong,” Kerr said. “Maybe those were all illegal screens but it didn’t feel like it watching the game.” One day later, Kerr doubled down on his post-Game 4 comments.“There was definitely some gamesmanship,” Kerr said after a team meeting Tuesday afternoon. “And look, I give them credit. If you can sell a call in t...Warriors down 3-1: Comebacks are rare, but this core has done it before

Coming back from down 3-1 in an NBA playoff series is no small feat.Entering this year’s second round, there have been 277 instances of a team falling into a 3-1 series hole in NBA history. Only 13 of them have come back to win the series — a measly 4.7%.Those are the odds stacked against the Warriors entering Wednesday night’s Game 5 against the Lakers, who need to win just one more game to advance to the Western Conference finals. But if any team knows how to fight through not one, not two, but three straight elimination games and win them all, it’s this Warriors core of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. After all, they’ve done it once before — and been on the other end of another one.Back in the 2016 Western Conference finals, the Warriors were down 3-1 to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a series that followed the same path as this Lakers one — losing Game 1 at home before a comfortable Game 2 win, then dropping Games 3 and 4 on the road. When the Warriors returned t...Three killed, 10 injured in synagogue attack in Tunisia

Day four of the Oakland teachers’ strike began like the past three — by 7:30 a.m. teachers had packed the picket lines at schools across the city. But Skyline High seniors Nailah Karigaca and Kereina Chung have settled into a different strike routine: at 11 a.m. Tuesday, the two were just waking up from a sleepover, and getting ready to have breakfast before studying for their upcoming AP exams.“It feels kind of like the COVID years,” said Karigaca, age 17.Like seniors across the country, Karigaca and Chung have had a rocky high school experience. Their freshman and sophomore years were almost entirely virtual — and now, weeks before graduation, their school was shuttered again. Yesterday, Karigaca attended an AP biology study session on the shores of Lake Merritt, and aside from her teacher, she was the only one who showed up. Today, Chung was planning to work on her senior project on homelessness, which she would record herself presenting by the end of the week.Nailah Karigaca, a ...Tunisian naval guard kills 3 near synagogue; 10 injured

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) — A Tunisian naval guard shot and killed a colleague and two civilians Tuesday as he tried to reach a synagogue on the Mediterranean island of Djerba during an annual Jewish pilgrimage, the Tunisian Interior Ministry said. The attacker was slain by security guards, and 10 people were injured. The motive for the attack was under investigation. It came as Tunisia, once a prized tourist destination and birthplace of the Arab Spring pro-democracy uprisings, has fallen into political and economic crisis. Djerba, a picturesque island off the southern coast of Tunisia, is home to the North African country’s main Jewish community. The civilians killed were French and Tunisian, the Tunisian Foreign Ministry said. It was not immediately clear if they were pilgrims attending ceremonies at the 2,500-year-old Ghriba temple, one of Africa’s oldest synagogues. Those injured include six security agents and four civilians, the Interior Ministry said.
