SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A man who spent months in jail awaiting trial on an assault charge was released after it was determined he was defending himself from sexual assault, the San Francisco Public Defender's Office said Thursday. His claim of self-defense was never investigated, according to the public defender's office. DENVER (AP) — If the Denver Broncos finally figure out how to beat Patrick Mahomes and end their 16-game losing streak to the Kansas City Chiefs, don’t expect Sean Payton to be the life of the party. He was suprisingly surly after the Broncos held off the Green Bay Packers 19-17 last weekend for his first home win and snapped a streak in which they’d lost an NFL record 10 consecutive games when leading at halftime.Three of those blown leads came this season under Payton, who took exception when asked about it during an oddly combative postgame news conference.Mistakenly thinking a reporter said “your team” when he actually said “this team,” Payton retorted, “MY team hasn’t lost 10 straight,” then admonished the reporter to rephrase his question accordingly. Payton dismissed the redirected question about the Broncos “getting over the hump.”“It wasn’t OUR hump — it wasn’t OUR hump,” retorted Payton. “I’m saying that respectfully — it wasn’t our...Police in Texas could arrest migrants under a bill that is moving closer to approval by the governor

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas is closer to giving police broad new authority to arrest migrants and order them to leave the U.S. under a bill the state House advanced Thursday, putting Republican Gov. Greg Abbott on the path toward a potential new confrontation with the Biden administration over immigration. Tempers flared over the proposal in the Texas Capitol, where Hispanic Democratic lawmakers led hours of emotional protests over issues of race and the legality of the plan before House Republicans passed the bill on a party-line vote before sunrise.A similar proposal has already cleared the Texas Senate, meaning Republicans must now agree on a version before sending it to Abbott’s desk. “Our cries for help in the enforcement of existing federal immigration laws have been ignored by President Biden. We have had enough,” said Republican state Rep. David Spiller, author of the House bill. It pulled off a 16-team tournament over 30 days. The Springboks and All Blacks reached the final unbeaten. The Springboks shut down wingers Jonah Lomu and Marc Ellis, who each scored a record seven tournament tries and led 9-6 on kicks at halftime. New Zealand’s Andrew Mehrtens kicked a second-half drop goal and they finished regulation time 9-all. In extra time, the teams added penalties in the first half and, in the second, Joel Stransky landed his title-clinching second drop goal. ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office on Thursday announced taxpayers will cover the costs of her recent visit to wartime Israel, reversing course after a nonprofit was supposed to pick up the tab but has yet to receive clearance from a state ethics panel. The Democratic governor and a handful of staff and state police were in Israel last week, touring the country and meeting with officials and families displaced by the conflict. Hochul had sidestepped multiple questions on who funded the trip, with her office saying only that a nonprofit group pledged to pay and that an ethics panel was reviewing the arrangement. On Thursday, Hochul spokesperson Avi Small said the state will instead pay for the trip because the ethics board has not yet made a formal determination on the nonprofit group. He said the trip was initially going to be reimbursed by the UJA-Federation, a nonprofit that has previously paid for elected officials to travel to Israel. Jonah Lomu was corralled, Joel Stransky hit the winning drop goal in extra time and Nelson Mandela wore a Springboks jersey and cap. It could only be 1995.The fates have prevented rugby’s legendary rivalry from featuring in another final until now, and even this was unexpected. It’s the first final in which both teams have lost a pool match. The All Blacks lost to France. The Springboks lost to Ireland. Stade de France rocked for both unsurprising results. But the old stadium was literally shaking on consecutive nights in the quarterfinals when the All Blacks stunned Ireland and the Springboks knocked out host France. The Springboks...Live: Heavily armed police surround Maine shooting suspect's home

Your hands in the air,” police shouted through a megaphone outside the home owned by suspect Robert Card’s relative near the town of Bowdoin.Dozens of law enforcement officials had descended on the property, with extended announcements calling for Card and anyone in the home to come out into the driveway. In most instances when police execute warrants — even for suspects wanted for violent crimes — they move quickly to enter the home.“The announcements that are being heard over a loudspeaker are standard search warrant announcements when executing a warrant...Latest news
