Opinion: To end Ukraine conflict, Western companies must exit Russia
Published Wed, 27 Nov 2024 11:52:04 GMT
In February 2022, Russian forces launched a full-scale invasion onto the sovereign territory of democratic Ukraine. And for the past 18 months, everyday Ukrainians have heroically taken up arms to defend their land and way of life from imposing forces.Americans have traveled to Ukraine and surrounding nations to render humanitarian aid in various forms. The White House has provided significant materiel to the Ukrainian military. But excess American tanks and aid workers aren’t the only things that will affect the outcome of this bloody conflict: American and multinational corporations may yet determine how long this conflict endures.Corporations that operate in Russia provide tax revenue that fills President Putin’s war chest. Operating in Russia means maintaining relations with a belligerent actor. Western companies that remain in Russia are financing the targeting of maternity wards, apartment complexes and key civilian evacuation routes in Ukraine. After the invasion, over 1,000 ...Opinion: It’s time to rethink the value of presidential primary debates
Published Wed, 27 Nov 2024 11:52:04 GMT
Televised presidential debates during the general election are viewed as the ultimate candidate showcase. They give voters the opportunity to watch competing worldviews and policy positions clash on America’s most significant political stage. Viewers get to test their assumptions about the candidates in real time.Voters want to know how a potential commander in chief will perform in the face of adversity, and facing off against the other party’s nominee and hostile moderators is a great test. But do this cycle’s primary debates provide that same value? There is a fair argument to make that the answer is no.Because the candidates’ policy positions from either party are often similar, primary debates are much less about policy and overwhelmingly about character and personalities. In the modern era, the best debaters rarely go on to secure the nomination.Nobody will accuse George W. Bush or Mitt Romney of being debate-club presidents, and John McCain’s performances were often viewed as ...Tomales Bay invaded by self-cloning sea anemones from Southern Hemisphere

By Jake Coyle | Associated PressFranz Kafka never realized how close he came to kickstarting a superhero franchise.Ever since Gregor Samsa awoke in his bed to find himself transformed into a monstrous dung beetle in “The Metamorphosis,” we’ve had spider-men, wasps, ant-men, crime-fighting ticks and mighty mantises — such a super swarm of insectoids that you might be tempted to reach for a fly swatter. We’re now back to the beetle with the new DC Comics film “Blue Beetle,” which opens in theaters Thursday. But what distinguishes “Blue Beetle” isn’t its place in the bug brigade but the person doing the metamorphosizing.Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) is the first Latino superhero in a leading role in a DC film. It’s not just token casting, either. “Blue Beetle,” directed by Ángel Manuel Soto and written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, is firmly rooted in the experience of the Reyes clan, a close-knit Mexican-American family...Mediterranean with contemporary charisma

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Ever since Usain Bolt exited the men’s sprint game, the 100 meters — the race for the title of “Fastest Man in the World” — has been a snoozy affair filled with men of few words and names from out of nowhere.Maybe, just maybe, that’s about to change, just in time for the run-up to next year’s Paris Olympics. Two of the fastest sprinters in the United States, Noah Lyles and Fred Kerley, brought some smack talk and even a bit of fun back to track, turning a routine news conference Friday in advance of the start of world championships into something a tad better. The spark was Lyles’ recent declaration on social media that he’s aiming to run 9.65 seconds in the 100 and 19.10 in the 200, which is his specialty.Someone asked Kerley, the defending world champion, what he might tell people about himself with the 100 set to kick off Saturday.“I’m Fred Kerley, this is my title,” he said. “If Noah’s going to run 9.65, then IR...PSG goalkeeper Sergio Rico leaves the hospital after recovering from a head injury caused by a horse
