Why it is more difficult to diagnose girls with autism than boys  AUSTIN (KXAN) – The prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has grown rapidly in the last couple of decades. Though the number of girls diagnosed with the developmental disorder has risen along with the overall numbers, doctors say that diagnosing girls with ASD is more challenging than with boys. ASD is a developmental disability characterized by persistent difficulties in social interaction and repetitive behaviors, interests or activities that make communicating and participating in daily activities more challenging, according to the CDC. The CDC first began tracking autism in children in Atlanta in 1996. In 2000, it established the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network, which expanded the tracking to nine more U.S. metropolitan regions. Since then, the prevalence of autism in children has markedly risen. In 2000, the network found that around one in 150 children had ASD. 18 years later, this number jumped to around one in 44.And sinc...

A City Park West mansion is Denver’s newest landmark despite its owner’s opposition For only the second time in the city’s history, the Denver City Council voted to make a building a historic landmark against that property owner’s wishes. That owner on Monday called the decision “anti-affordable housing” and said he is considering legal remedies. The stately home eventually turned nonprofit space at 1741 Gaylord St. would be on its way to demolition to make way for a four-story apartment building with 50 or more units if owner and developer Mike Mathieson had his way.But 10 City Council members on Monday voted to make the house a landmark and spare it from the wrecking ball.Councilmembers Kevin Flynn, Stacie Gilmore and Chris Herndon were not present for the vote, which made the controversial decision a unanimous one.“To be very honest, I hate hostile historic designations. Colorado plan will put more electric trucks, semitrailers on the road beginning in 2027 Colorado’s trucking industry will need to start investing in zero-emission semitrailers, buses and delivery trucks as soon as 2027 as part of the state’s strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the cause of climate change. The Colorado Air Quality Control Commission on Friday approved a plan to convert most of the medium- and heavy-duty trucks sold in the state to electric vehicles or vehicles that run off of hydrogen fuel cells, starting in 2027, with a goal to have 40% of all semitrailers sold running on zero-emission engines by 2035.The plan, which is modeled after a rule created in 2020 in California, does not require companies to buy these trucks, but instead orders truck manufacturers to sell the vehicles.“The manufacturers are required to make sure they meet a certain percentage of sales targets so it will encourage them to bring their vehicles to Colorado and provide attractive pricing for those vehicles,” said Will Toor, executive director of the...

Fascinating new books cover Colorado bluebirds, Western towns, mining-era massacres “Remembering Ludlow But Forgetting the Columbine,” by Leigh Campbell-Hale (University Press of Colorado)Remembering Ludlow but Forgetting the Columbine (University Press of Colorado)Most Coloradans know about the Ludlow Massacre but know nothing about the massacre at the Columbine Mine near Serene, which had far more influence on America’s labor politics. Six miners died, and another 60 were wounded at the Columbine. The strike polished the image of Josephine Roche, later part of Franklin Roosevelt’s cabinet. Roche was a Progressive who inherited control of Rocky Mountain Fuel Co., which owned the mine, and was credited with humanitarian actions during the strike. Author Leigh Campbell-Hale disputes that, claiming tight control over her image led to hagiographic portrayals of Roche by feminist historians. “She gave lip-service to democracy, industrial and otherwise, but her actions often contradicted her own press releases,” writes Campbell-Hale.“Remembering Ludlow But Fo...

Woah! It’s Deante’ Hitchcock Woah! It’s Deante’ Hitchcock: Grammy nominated rapper Deante’ Hitchcock has released new single “Woah!” That will be followed by his album Once Upon a Time on May 10.The album details the journey the Atlanta artist has been on recently, culminating in the birth of his son Otto Saint Hitchcock.“At what was shaping up to be a turning point in my life, the world as we know it seemed to stop turning altogether. I watched our world change, and in the midst of it all, I had a son, became a father, and watched my world change as well,” said Hitchcock in a statement. “The word ‘son’ feels hella ironic to read, like the sun up in the sky that I used to stare at until it became an almost blinding blue bouncing ball of light, my son came into the world and brought a brightness into my life that could rival that of its homophone. His mother and I are forever in awe, and forever thankful for our angel, our Saint. The story of how we got here is no fairytale, but I’l...
