WEST POINT, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- West Point officials opened a long forgotten capsule on Monday that was found inside the base of a monument. The container was discovered in May during a statue restoration project. It is believed it was put there by a group of cadets sometime in the 1820s.The box didn't meet expectations, however. Historians only found a layer of silt they think settled at the bottom because moisture got into the container. But officials said they aren't done investigating the mystery. "We don't want to think they went through all this trouble to not put anything in it, so what we are gonna do is we will take the silt, put it through a fine mesh screen, and find any remains and determine what if anything was in here," West Point archeologist Paul Hudson said. "Potentially, it was something small and organic that may have come apart over time, but we are just not certain."Historians a...Former Belleville resident one of 3 Marines killed in Osprey crash in Australia

Having been around a team that pushed all its chips into the middle of the table for JaMarcus Russell and come up empty, it’s clear the damage that can be done to a franchise that whiffs with a premium draft pick on its quarterback of the future. The 49ers aren’t the Raiders, though, and Trey Lance is the farthest thing from Russell in terms of commitment and dedication. I was covering an Andre Ward fight at Oracle Arena in 2010 and when Russell came in fashionably late: The booing was so fierce Ward appeared confused while he wailed away at an overmatched opponent against the ropes. The last time Lance played for the 49ers, in the second preseason game, he was greeted by cheers from the home crowd at Levi’s Stadium. The Lance gamble was a regrettable mistake — coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch admitted as much in postgame press conferences late Friday night — but it’s hardly the ruination of the franchise. The effect in future years ...California conservative groups promote anti-trans bills as state AB sues school district over anti-trans policy

The battle over transgender rights is heating up in California, where the state sued a Southern California school district on Monday while conservatives launched an effort for a statewide ballot measure.Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit against Chino Valley Unified School District over its parental notification policy that took effect in July and requires district schools to alert parents if a student begins using a name or pronoun different from the one on their official records. The same day, Republican lawmakers and conservative activists rallied at the state Capitol to announce they are starting signature-backed ballot initiatives for three bills targeting transgender students, after a recent related bill failed to gain ground in the Democrat-controlled legislature.“The forced outing policy wrongfully endangers the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of non-conforming students who lack an accepting environment in the classroom and at home,” Bonta said...San Jose: Son arrested on suspicion of killing father
