GREELEY — A Colorado police officer on trial for putting a handcuffed woman in a parked police vehicle that was hit by a freight train testified Tuesday that she did not realize the officer who had arrived before her had parked it on the tracks. After racing to the scene, Officer Jordan Steinke said, she quickly parked her patrol vehicle behind the other one and got out because it was the quickest way “to get a gun in the fight” — hers. She explained that she was surprised the other officer was still sitting in his vehicle.Steinke also said she did not notice the tracks or the ground when she squatted down to arrest a kneeling Yareni Rios-Gonzalez after the suspect was ordered out of her pickup truck. The tracks and railroad crossing signs can be seen in her body camera video from the Sept. 16, 2022, incident. When pressed by Deputy District Attorney Christopher Jewkes, Steinke replied, “I am sure I saw the tracks sir, but I did not perceive them.” She explained that she w...Rollover crash forces closure of southbound I-25 at 23rd Avenue

A local developer’s 11th-hour attempt to derail Costco’s plans to build in Brentwood fell on deaf ears Tuesday, with the City Council unanimously upholding the Planning Commission’s earlier approvals for the project.Though the commission on June 20 gave the green light for the proposed new store south of Lone Tree Plaza and east of Heidorn Ranch Road, West Coast Home Builders, an Albert D. Seeno III company, filed an appeal on June 28. Attorneys for the Concord developer argued that the environmental documents the city used for the project were outdated and asked the council to reconsider. But a little more than an hour before the council meeting was to begin, attorneys for the builder dumped a 159-page document with more arguments against the Brentwood Costco project, which city staff said they did not have time to thoroughly review before the meeting. The city’s legal counsel said that receiving the documents at such a late hour made it impossible for staff to analyze the informatio...Photos: Savannah Bananas thrill fans in San Jose

A federal appeals court panel has halted next month’s planned execution of a 45-year-old Missouri man convicted of killing a 6-year-old girl, though the state is appealing the ruling. The three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday voted 2-1 to stop the execution of Johnny Johnson, who is scheduled to receive a lethal injection next Tuesday at the state prison in Bonne Terre for killing Casey Williamson after trying to sexually assault her in 2002.The Missouri Attorney General’s Office responded by asking that the full 8th Circuit court reconsider the case, which will likely end up before the U.S. Supreme Court before the scheduled execution date.Attorneys for Johnson have claimed he isn’t mentally competent to be executed because his schizophrenia prevents him from understanding the link between his crime and the punishment. They have also said Johnson has delusions about the devil using his death to bring about the end of the world. The Mi...Nigerian doctors walk off the job again.
