From zero to NIL: How student-athletes can manage name, image, likeness income When University of Notre Dame sophomore Calyn “KK” Bransford takes the court this upcoming basketball season, she’ll do so with a touch of glam thanks to her false lashes. She wants to look good while hooping, but wearing the lashes is also her job.Bransford is under contract as a brand ambassador for Opulence Lashes and earns money by promoting the company’s products. That’s possible thanks to a sea change in NCAA rules governing college athletes, who can now make money from their “ NIL ” — name, image and likeness.Prompted by a Supreme Court decision that invalidated restrictions on certain payments to student-athletes, the NCAA changed its rules on NIL income in 2021. While student-athletes still can’t be paid to play their sport or attend a specific school, they can receive money for things like ad deals, endorsements and appearances. Student-athletes’ NIL earning opportunities are governed by a patchwork of state laws and school and conference rules. Before Bransford went to col...

What is the summer solstice? An astronomer explains

What is the summer solstice? An astronomer explains (The Conversation) - The summer solstice marks the official start of summer. It brings the longest day and shortest night of the year for the 88% of Earth’s people who live in the Northern Hemisphere. People around the world traditionally observe the change of seasons with bonfires and festivals and Fête de la Musique celebrations.Astronomers can calculate an exact moment for the solstice, when Earth reaches the point in its orbit where the North Pole is angled closest to the sun. That moment will be at 10:58 a.m. Eastern Time on June 21 this year. From Earth, the sun will appear farthest north relative to the stars. People living on the Tropic of Cancer, 23.5 degrees north of the Equator, will see the sun pass straight overhead at noon.Six months from now the sun will reach its southern extreme and pass overhead for people on the Tropic of Capricorn, and northerners will experience their shortest days of the year, at the winter solstice.(Getty Images)The sun’s angle ...

Recipe: Meatballs in tomato sauce get a little lighter

Recipe: Meatballs in tomato sauce get a little lighter Meatballs in tomato sauce are a comforting thing, a ruddy, garlicky Italian American classic meant to be nestled on a pile of spaghetti and showered in cheese. This dish is not that.True, it has meatballs, assertively flavored with garlic and browned in hot oil. And yes, they finish cooking in a savory, brick-red tomato sauce. But that’s where the similarities end. Because these are summer meatballs. The traditional dish, to my mind, is an ideal winter companion. A cozy mix of canned tomatoes and olive oil bubbling leisurely on the stove, it’s perfect to sit close by when it’s chilly out, as warming as a woolly turtleneck.Think of this version as meatballs all decked out in their resort wear. Made from fresh summer tomatoes that are only briefly cooked, the sauce stays juicy and bright — and making it won’t heat up your kitchen. What the dish loses in long-cooked marinara richness, it more than makes up for in sweetness, tang and a fragrant touch of spice. The sweetness comes from seas...

98.3 TRY Social Dilemma: Can I Mandate That Guests Don't Take Any Pictures at My Party? ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Today's 98.3 TRY Social Dilemma came from Lisa and it's about picture taking at a party. Here's the email: Get the latest, news, weather, sports and community events delivered right to your inbox! Hi Jaime hope you’re having a great morning. My name is Lisa and I’m emailing you because I’m having a barbeque on the 4th of July, and I want to ask my guests to not take or post any pictures on social media so those not invited don’t get mad at me. Like I said the party is going to be on the 4th and I’m going to invite around 70 people. There are around 30 other people that I couldn’t invite and feel bad about, but it just didn’t work out because of how much room I have in my yard. I just don’t want to lose friends over it you know. People see pictures on Facebook and wonder why they weren’t invited and then I get a phone call or text asking why and I never know what to say. So I don’t want anyone taking or posting pictures of the party. Can I ask people not to...
