ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Manager Phil Nevin said it will likely be a couple more days before the Los Angeles Angels finalize when Shohei Ohtani will make his next pitching start.Ohtani went only four innings in a 5-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night due to cramping in his pitching hand and fingers. Ohtani said the cramping was largely in his right middle finger.Nevin was optimistic that Ohtani’s next start — which would be on Wednesday against the San Francisco Giants — wouldn’t need to be pushed back.“I think it’s fine. All reports today were the same, too,” Nevin said.Ohtani struggled with a finger blister and a fingernail problem for a few starts last month, but Nevin said those issues aren’t related to the cramping problems Ohtani had Thursday night.Ohtani — who leads the majors with 40 home runs — was in the lineup in his usual spot at designated hitter Friday night. When asked if a day off might help Ohtani, Nevin said Ohtani hasn’t asked fo...49ers quarterback Brock Purdy feels ‘normal’ as he works is way back from elbow surgery

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Brock Purdy knows the process of getting ready for the season after major elbow surgery in the offseason is a deliberate one with each day providing a new test.He got an unexpected one earlier this week when teammate Clelin Ferrell hit his surgically repaired throwing arm as he attempted a throw, knocking the ball out and causing San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan to “to hold my breath so I didn’t lose my mind.”For Purdy, it was just another play on his road back to being the starting quarterback.“I feel like as a coach, a teammate watching, yeah, they might be scared about that, especially how things ended last year with my arm,” Purdy said Friday. “But, honestly for myself, it’s just football. I wasn’t even thinking about it. He hit the ball out of my hand and I was going through to finish the throw and the ball ended up being on the ground. It’s football. Was I mad at Clelin or anything like that? I told him, ‘Dude, it’s football. I get it. W...Griner expected to return for Mercury after 3-game break to focus on her mental health

The stretcher fell over, hit my car,” Scott said.Scott’s neighbor took the video after hearing a loud thud outside. That’s a human being,” she said, “but then secondly, they damaged my car and they’re workers of the medical examiner’s office, and there was not one mention of any of that happening in the report.” The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner told 7News it is “aware of a matter related to ...Yankees Notebook: Aaron Judge doesn’t start but pinch-hits against Astros as he deals with injured toe

Judge, 31, then exited after the three-pitch punch out, with Ben Rortvedt coming into the game to catch. Before Friday, Judge had started six of the Yankees’ seven games since coming off the injured last week. He served as the team’s designated hitter the previous four days.“It was either tonight or tomorrow,” manager Aaron Boone said of resting Judge.“I know he’s not physically all the way there by any means, so I know I’ve got to do it. … Pleased with how it’s going, but also making sure that I do right by him, but that we get him built up so that hopefully ...Blue Jays hit five home runs, beat Red Sox 7-3 in crucial series opener

As far as early August series go, this weekend’s showdown between the Red Sox and Blue Jays is as big as it gets. The two division rivals have been jockeying for position in the American League Wild Card hunt for months, and whoever comes out on top here at Fenway could set the tone for the race going forward.Unfortunately for the Red Sox, the Blue Jays wasted no time making sure they struck first.Toronto hit the ball all over the yard in Friday night’s series opener, powering five home runs — including one on the first pitch of the game — to beat the Red Sox 7-3.Though it was only Toronto’s first win over Boston in eight tries this season, it came at a particularly crucial time, giving the Blue Jays three games of separation in the Wild Card standings. No matter what happens the rest of the weekend, the Blue Jays are guaranteed to leave Boston on Sunday in playoff position.Making his first start since Tuesday’s trade deadline, James Paxton got hammered early...Patriots training camp Day 10: Tyquan Thornton returns, kicking battle continues during in-stadium practice

FOXBORO — Ten days, nine practices, another well-earned rest. The Patriots headed into their second break of training camp late Friday night after holding their annual in-stadium practice before season ticket holders and Foxboro residents. After initial warmups and drills, players were divided into Blue and White teams. Wearing shorts and shells, they engaged in a non-competitive game simulation run mostly at three-quarters speed to prepare for the feel and timing of a regular-season game.No drive was run entirely at full speed. Even the punt and field goal tries didn’t feature a live rush, and the special teams were the most competitive moments of the night.Elsewhere, Tyquan Thornton returned to full participation, a longtime captain was curiously absent and the rookie class keeps turning heads. Here are the Herald’s complete practice observations.AttendanceNon-participants: OT Trent Brown, OLB Matthew Judon, OL Cole Strange, RB/WR Ty Montgomery, ST Matthew Slater, DB Bra...Patriots’ Jack Jones breaks silence on arrest, departure from practice

FOXBORO — Patriots cornerback Jack Jones spoke to reporters Friday for the first time since he was arrested on felony gun charges for allegedly carrying two loaded firearms into Logan Airport in June.It wasn’t Jones’ only recent incident. The 25-year-old cornerback also abruptly left practice without medical attention Thursday. Twenty minutes after Jones left the field following a pass breakup over wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, he returned to the sideline and took a knee for the remainder of practice. It’s unclear what caused Jones to leave practice and whether he was ejected or chose to leave on his own.Related ArticlesNew England Patriots | Patriots, LB Matt Judon agree to reworked contract with more guaranteed money New England Patriots | Christian Gonzalez learning from ‘heavyweight’ matchup in Patriots training camp New England Patriots | Patriots coaches respond to Jack Jones leaving Thursday pract...Latest news
