How many local school teachers or office workers can afford one of their million-dollar “affordable” units? The builder’s remedy and greedy developers represent completely unrealistic and destructive ways of solving the housing crisis. Blind San Francisco homeless man found not guilty after panhandling 'assault' SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A blind San Francisco homeless man who was accused of kicking a woman in the leg for refusing to give him $1 was found not guilty by a jury this week. Jurors acquitted Charles Underwood, 50, of misdemeanor assault and battery charges. While awaiting trial for the assault charge earlier this year, Underwood was subjected to a stay-away order from a seven-block area where he had been living on the streets. In May, he was arrested for returning to the area for panhandling. After his May arrest, Underwood took the extraordinary step of requesting to remain in jail in hopes that the court would send his case to trial faster amid a growing backlog of cases in San Francisco Superior Court. "No one should feel like they have to stay in jail just to get a trial," said Deputy Public Defender Sarah Hashemi. "We are grateful to the jury for their verdict and relieved that Mr. Underwood is finally free of these constraints that had banned him from an area that has become ...

Former safe haven for homeless during pandemic, Oasis Inn to become shelter (BCN) -- A hotel in San Francisco that acted as an emergency shelter during the pandemic was on the verge of shutting down and being placed on the private market. After months of community advocacy, it will now permanently serve as a safe place for San Francisco women and families experiencing homelessness. On Tuesday, the Tenderloin-based service center St. Anthony Foundation announced its plans to step in and purchase Oasis Inn so families residing in its 59 hotel rooms would not have to move out. St. Anthony's considers the acquisition of 900 Franklin St. to be a major expansion in its commitment to providing stability for San Franciscans in need. Under the operations of the Providence Foundation of San Francisco, the hotel will continue to provide private rooms for over 300 women and children a year, including survivors of domestic violence. (AP) — The Chicago Blackhawks selected Connor Bedard with the first pick in the NHL draft on Wednesday night, kick-starting a hopeful new era with a highly skilled offensive forward who’s drawn comparisons to Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby.Bedard became the second No. 1 pick in Blackhawks history, joining Patrick Kane, who went first overall in 2007 and helped form the core of a team that won three Stanley Cups from 2010 to 2015.Though Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson declined to reveal who he would take first since winning the draft lottery in May, Bedard was considered Chicago’s target all along among a prospect class filled with talented forwards.“It’s incredible. I couldn’t be happier,” Bedard said. His debut could very well be against Crosby on the NHL’s opening night on Oct. 10, when Chicago is scheduled to play at Pittsburgh.“I got to make it first, but that would be unreal.
