Bruce Yandle: Presidential candidates and the myth of dwindling manufacturing It seems increasingly likely that, for a third consecutive term, we’ll have a president who strongly identifies with American manufacturing while believing it needs his help to thrive. Since President Donald Trump’s 2016 arrival and continuing through the Biden administration, we’ve been reminded again and again that America has lost its industrial muscle, that their efforts can recover this might, and that tariffs and subsidies will help “build back better” or “make America great again.”Let’s have a little perspective during this next election cycle. Assuring us that protect...

Ask Amy: Grandmother dreads Christmastime visit Dear Amy: My daughter and granddaughter are coming to spend 10 days with us over the Christmas holidays.I am dreading the visit because my 3-year-old granddaughter is unable to be around others without being the center of attention! If adults try to have a conversation she interrupts continuously, and if she has nothing to actually say, she just makes loud noises. It is beyond irritating.I try not to interfere with my daughter’s parenting, but I’m not sure how to survive 10 days of this, when even brief phone calls with the two of them make me crazy.Any advice?— Sad GrandmaDear Sad: It is extremely common for 3-year-old children to want to dominate their primary parent’s attention.Children learn not to do this through a combination of repeated reminders and distractions: “The adults are speaking to each other. This old-school building material could take over city skylines It is right to say that the construction of one of the tallest timber buildings in the world — the Sara Cultural Center here — began when a pine seedling was planted in a nearby commercial forest almost a century ago, writes William Booth.Green SpacesBlueprints for a more resilient planetPeople had no idea back then what role the little sapling might play beyond the sawmill.
