How close is too close when it comes to elk-watching in Estes Park?

How close is too close when it comes to elk-watching in Estes Park? As a crowd of onlookers gathered on a bike path along a nine-hole golf course in Estes Park on a brisk morning in late September, Rodney Ford peered through a magnifying scope attached to a tripod. He was focused on a magnificent bull elk that was sitting in the shade of pine trees on the ninth hole beside the Big Thompson River, surrounded by three dozen females that the herd bull was anxious to impregnate.Ford and his wife had driven from Shreveport, La., spending the night in a van parked nearby, to witness the annual drama of elk rutting season in one of Colorado’s favorite mountain towns.“I drove 16 hours just for this right here,” drawled Ford, who was situated about 100 yards from the herd. “We come here every year. This is what we do. We travel in that van, me and my wife; we go all over the United States looking at wildlife.”Fall was in the air, with scarcely a cloud in the sky, and fresh snow was visible high on the north face of Longs Peak. Sanborn County Park cleanup kicks off at Christensen Nursery Sanborn County Park is getting a much needed makeover.Santa Clara County recently launched the Sanborn County Master Plan to clean up the park and bring in new campgrounds, trail connections and other recreational activities for the community.Workers are starting the cleanup process at the former Christensen Nursery in the 3,500-acre park in Saratoga. They must remove waste material and debris from the former nursery operations, and contaminated soils will be removed and backfilled with native soils.Fallen and dead trees will be cut, chipped or removed, and the county will develop a tree protection plan to minimize the removal of vulnerable vegetation.“Cleanup is not as simple as it sounds,” said County Supervisor Joe Simitian in a press release. “Soils need to be treated to make sure they’re safe for the public. Trees need to be preserved and protected where possible. Once all this work is done, the foundation for a new public space will be in place, and that’s exciting.”“Sanborn Pa...

Rare Northern California wildflower designated endangered

Rare Northern California wildflower designated endangered Lassics lupine, a small wildflower that grows in only two areas of Northern California will be listed under the Endangered Species Act last Thursday. Those who’ve studied the flower say this listing is well needed and the species needs action to save it from extinction.“It’s so darn beautiful,” said Dave Imper, a retired botanist and lead author of the ESA petition.Imper estimates there are generally less than 1,000 that live on the remote mountains on the border of eastern Humboldt County and Trinity County. A press release from the US Fish and Wildlife service says the agency is designating around 512 acres of habitat in the Six Rivers National Forest as critical habitat for the flower.Previous managers of Six Rivers National Forest weren’t on board with conservation efforts to protect the flower, said Imper, what he says was the major issue in the last decade.“In one case, they actually worked against us from doing some of the management that we thought was needed,” he said. Now, ...

North Bay residents may see dark, heavy smoke from prescribed fire (KRON) -- Smoke from a 200-acre controlled burn scheduled from Oct. 3-5 in the North Bay is expected to be in full view of populated areas, according to the County of Marin.Residents and travelers in and around Novato or northern San Rafael areas of Lucas Valley, Marinwood, Terra Linda and Santa Venetia can expect to see the smoke released in full view. Commuters along Highway 101 will also be able to see the smoke, officials said. Due to the quantity of dry vegetation, Marin County Fire Chief Jason Weber said that the smoke is expected to be “darker and heavier than usual.”Fire officials are asking the community to refrain from calling 911 if smoke is seen in the controlled burn area around Big Rock Ridge. Traffic may be impacted due to fire engines and fire trucks on area roads before and after the controlled burn. Heavy equipment and a helicopter will also be used during the burn. Summer heat, recent drought may mute fall foliage

Summer heat, recent drought may mute fall foliage With cooler weather expected this weekend, and the calendar flipped to October, many of us might be tempted to check out fall foliage — especially since three leaf-viewing vistas in the D.C. area rank in Yelp’s list of 20 best places in the U.S.Even in the magnificence of Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park and the U.S. National Arboretum, this year’s colors may not be as spectacular as years past, according to 7News First Alert Meteorologist Brian van de Graaff.“We’ve had a fairly dry spate of water, and also a pretty hot stretch late in the summer, so there are some things that can impact the color,” he said.“Shenandoah Valley and out through the Blue Ridge, they’re under a higher drought situation as of late,” van de Graaff said. “They’ve seen some color change, but it’s been more stress-change, where they actually turn brown more quickly, and see early leaf drop.”However, he said “now that we’...

Plan now for a dahlia garden next year, and don’t be intimidated

Plan now for a dahlia garden next year, and don’t be intimidated I’ve always adored dahlias – in other people’s gardens. As much as their cheerful appearance intrigued me, there was something about the planting, staking, digging up and storing-over-winter routine that intimidated me.But the longer I garden, the more I grow to appreciate their beauty and amenability. For one, they’re available in so many different sizes, colors and even flower shapes that it’s fair to say no two dahlia cultivars are alike. And the choices! There are anemone, cactus, peony, orchid and waterlily types; singles, doubles and even dinner plate dahlias as large as, well, dinner plates. With 42 recognized species and hundreds of hybrids, it’s impossible not to find at least one that will complement your garden.Dahlias bloom in cut-and-come-again fashion, which is to say you can pick bouquets to fill as many vases as you can, and the plants will continue to produce flowers from summer straight through fall.“Dahlias are actually simple to grow,” Lauren Sikorski, co-owner of...
