Kevin De Bruyne’s shot flew like a missile, skimming just above the turf in a trajectory not dissimilar to Carlos Alberto’s glorious goal for Brazil in the 1970 World Cup final.Of course, this was no title match for Manchester City — it was the first leg of the Champions League semifinals — but with the eyes of the world on the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, it sure felt like one.Who else, then, should step up but De Bruyne, the man who delivers for City on the big occasion time and again. The Belgium playmaker looked to the sky and raised both his arms before performing a rare knee slide after his long-range equalizer for City in the 1-1 draw against Real Madrid on Tuesday.De Bruyne knew how significant the goal was. How good it was, too.He is making a habit of it.City has played Real Madrid in the Champions League’s knockout stage in three of the last four seasons, and De Bruyne has scored each time. And against Atletico Madrid last year, City won 1-0 after two fiery matches in the qua...US consumer prices picked up in April, pointing to still-persistent inflation pressures

Norfolk Southern’s stock fell before the opening bell Wednesday after the railroad unveiled plans to create a fund for residents near the site of an Ohio train wreck that would cover any decline in home values since a derailment earlier this year.In early February about 50 cars derailed in East Palestine, some carrying hazardous chemicals that spilled into nearby waterways. The U.S. filed a lawsuit against Norfolk Southern over environmental damage in March. Half of the 5,000 residents of East Palestine were evacuated as emergency personnel burned off some of the chemicals to avert an uncontrolled explosion.Norfolk Southern Corp. CEO Alan Shaw apologized for the impact the derailment has had on the community and the company has pledged to pay for the cleanup.Shaw said in a letter late Tuesday to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation that while the company has total accrued charges of almost $400 million for the derailment, that amount doesn’t inclu...Gunnison man reels in pending world record-breaking trout

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — U.S. Rep. George Santos, the New York Republican infamous for fabricating key parts of his life story, was arrested Wednesday on federal criminal charges ahead of an expected court appearance. The indictment says Santos induced supporters to donate to a company under the false pretense that the money would be used to support his campaign. Instead, it says, he used it for personal expenses, including luxury designer clothes and to pay off his credit cards.Santos also is accused of lying about his finances on congressional disclosure forms and applying for and receiving unemployment benefits while he was employed as regional director of an investment firm and running for Congress.U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said the indictment “seeks to hold Santos accountable for various alleged fraudulent schemes and brazen misrepresentations.”“Taken together, the allegations in the indictment charge Santos with relying on repeated dishonesty and deception to ascend to the ha...EU lawmakers urge Commission to tax big biz in face of soaring debt

BRUSSELS — European parliamentarians are calling on the Commission to introduce EU-wide taxes in order to cover soaring interest rates on the bloc’s joint debt.In a 356-199 vote, EU lawmakers on Wednesday backed a report urging the EU’s executive to raise levies on big businesses to finance its budget for 2024, which is under strain from record inflation and soaring interest on its common debt.Euroskeptic parties that oppose centralized EU tax-and-spend policies voted against such plans and called on the Commission to find additional funds from its annual budget, which ranges from €160 to €180 billion. But supporters point out that extra cash is not only essential to prop up the Recovery and Resilience Facility (or RRF — the first-ever instance of EU joint debt), but also to sustain responses to rising challenges, from climate change to the war in Ukraine.“We can’t stick to the EU budget being 1 percent [of the EU’s GDP], it’s a dogma and a limit we can’t work with,” Fren...Woman hit by utility box at Harvard station plans to sue MBTA

The woman hit by a utility box at the Harvard Red Line station plans to sue the MBTA.The 28-year-old Harvard University PhD. student has serious injuries, including a detached clavicle. The victim says her injuries will require long-term medical treatment and impact her studies. The incident happened on May 1 when the approximately 200 pound piece of equipment fell on the station’s Red Line inbound platform. The equipment had been suspended from a pole within the station and hit the woman as it came down. MBTA officials later determined that a corroded support strap led to the utility box falling. The equipment was one of 14 utility boxes that were part of a pilot program from 2011 that was led by the MIT Lincoln Laboratory and had been funded by the Department of Homeland Security. However, it had not been in use for ten years. On Friday, the T announced it had finished removing all remaining utility boxes from three Red Line stations.
