OZARK, MO -- If the walls of the Historic Morgue could talk, they would tell a tale of a building that housed the dead and the living. To this day, people are still laid to rest here.On the front porch of the property, there are two church doors and a single door that served as the entrance to the morgue during the early 1900s. This meant that bodies were prepared on one side while the other side housed the church, separated by solid oak garage doors. The building had been vacant before Alta Bivens purchased it, having previously served as the Christian County Museum for three decades. The history of ownership and the exact year of construction remain unknown."We don't know what year it was built. The cornerstone has an 1800 date on it. The steeple was thought to have been taken down in 1906," said Alta Bivens, owner of The Historic Morgue. "So I do know it was the Ozark undertaking company, an embalming company, a funeral home, a church, and a morgue. Starting in the early 1900s."Th...California landslide halts rail service, homes evacuated

Blame trucks.

Pedestrian deaths on American roads have risen by more than 70 percent since 2010, an increase that safe-streets advocates ascribe partly to our national love affair with trucks. Vehicles struck and killed 7,388 pedestrians in 2021, compared to 4,302 in 2010, according to federal crash data tabulated by The Hill. Pedestrian deaths rose by another 5 percent in the first half of 2022. Trucks aren’t solely to blame, but they are a key factor. The number of pedestrians killed by light utility trucks, the most common culprit after cars in the latest federal data, more than doubled between 2010 and 2021, from 732 to 1,773. “There’s this race to the bottom of people buying more large cars because they want to feel safer around all of the other large cars,” said Rebecca Sanders, founder of Safe Streets Research & Consulting, a crash analysis firm. “We are ever more vulnerable, ever more at risk, from these larger vehicles.” In 2010, Americans bought and leased cars a...Heading To The Desert? The Los Gatos Town Council last week sent safety improvements on Shannon Road back to the drawing board an effort to make the designs mesh with the rural, country feel of the road.Dozens of residents who live along the stretch of Shannon Road between Los Gatos Boulevard and Cherry Blossom Lane voiced their concerns at an April 18 meeting that the current designs were incompatible with the rural feel of the area. The town has been working to install sidewalks, bike lanes and street parking to improve the safety of the road, which is a popular route for students at Blossom Hill Elementary, Van Meter Elementary and Fisher Middle schools to bike or walk to school.“I love this street,” Mayor Maria Ristow said. “It’s beautiful, but I think it will also be beautiful when there’s sidewalks and bike lanes.”The council’s vote also transferred thousands of dollars in town funds to the project, while requiring that staff revise the design to add more trees and remove parking spaces and host an i...Latest news
