‘PAW Patrol’ shows bark at box office while ‘The Creator’ and ‘Dumb Money’ disappoint After several quiet weeks in movie theaters, four films entered wide release over the weekend. “PAW Patrol: The Might Movie” came out the top dog, with $23 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday. The performances of all four films – “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” “Saw X,” “The Creator” and “Dumb Money” – told a familiar story at the box office. What worked? Horror and animated franchises. What didn’t? Originality and comedy.“PAW Patrol,” from Paramount Pictures and Spin Master, had timing on its side. The film, a sequel to the 2021 “PAW Patrol” movie adapted from the Nickelodeon TV series, was the first family animated movie in theaters since “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” was released in early August. The first “PAW Patrol,” released during the pandemic, debuted with $13 million while simultaneously releasing on Paramount+, and its success in both arenas was a contributing factor in leading Nickelodeon chief Brian Robbins to be named head of Par...

Ukraine stresses strong US support after new aid is dropped from stop-gap budget bill LONDON (AP) — U.S. support for Ukraine remains “unwaveringly strong” despite news that the stop-gap budget Congress passed to avert a federal government shutdown will not include new financial support for Kyiv, a Ukrainian official said Sunday.Oleg Nikolenko, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, said a shutdown could have impacted ongoing aid programs but that the temporary budget would not affect the billions of dollars of financial assistance already pledged by lawmakers in Washington.“Support for Ukraine remains unwaveringly strong both in the U.S. administration, in both parties, in the houses of the U.S. Congress and most importantly, among the American people,” Nikolenko wrote on social media. The omission of additional Ukrainian aid from the shortr-term funding bill, which aims to keep the federal government running until Nov. 17, has raised concerns for a country that relies heavily on Western support in its fight against Russia’s ongoing invasion.A little m...

Costco CEO comments on possible membership price hike: 'You'll see it happen' (NEXSTAR) – As ever, the chief financial officer of Costco remains vague about any plans to increase membership fees. But make no mistake: The price hikes are coming.“It’s a question of when, not if,” Costco CFO Richard Galanti said during an earnings call last week, echoing previous statements he’s made in past calls.“You know, it's a little longer this time around since June of '17, so we're six years into it,” he added, referring to the last time Costco raised fees in 2017 (up from $55 to $60 for Gold Star members, and from $110 to $120 for executive memberships). “But you'll see it happen at some point. We can’t really tell you if it’s in our plans or not.” Costco crackdown: Can people in my household still use my Costco membership? In the 15 years prior to 2017’s membership increase, Costco had raised fees every five years and seven months, on average, as Galanti himself noted in a 2022 earnings call. If that trend had held steady, another price hike would have taken effect i...

iPhone too hot to handle? Apple says fix is on the way (AP) - Apple is blaming a software bug and other issues tied to popular apps such as Instagram and Uber for causing its recently released iPhone 15 models to heat up and spark complaints about becoming too hot to handle. The Cupertino, California, company said Saturday that it is working on an update to the iOS17 system that powers the iPhone 15 lineup to prevent the devices from becoming uncomfortably hot and is working with apps that are running in ways “causing them to overload the system."Instagram, owned by Meta Platforms, modified its social media app earlier this week to prevent it from heating up the device on the latest iPhone operating system.Uber and other apps such as the video game Asphalt 9 are still in the process of rolling out their updates, Apple said. It didn't specify a timeline for when its own software fix would be issued but said no safety issues should prevent iPhone 15 owners from using their devices while awaiting the update. iPhone 15 Pro and Pr...
