Modern earthquakes in US could be aftershocks from quakes in the 1800s, scientists say

By Allison Chinchar | CNNAfter large earthquakes, there is an expectation that aftershocks could occur in the hours and days that follow, but aftershocks from some of the strongest earthquakes in recorded United States history may still be happening — nearly 200 years later, new research has found.Frequent aftershock activities stemming from a trio of quakes that occurred near the Missouri-Kentucky border between 1811 and 1812, and a separate earthquake in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1886, are likely continuing today, according to a study published recently in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth. One of the regions researchers focused on, called the New Madrid seismic zone, encompasses present-day Memphis and the surrounding Mid-Mississippi River Valley area, and the other includes Charleston and the surrounding coastal plain. Seismic activity in these relatively stable regions of North America is not well understood, and its nature is debated among scientists, the st...

49ers-Seahawks preview: What you need to know for Week 14 rematch

SANTA CLARA – The 49ers’ birdwatching tour resumes this week with the familiar sight of Seahawks.Yes, the 49ers just scoped out these NFC West rivals on Thanksgiving Night and won 31-13 in Seattle. That division rivalry offers enough motivation to avoid a letdown after Sunday’s 42-19 titanic triumph over the host Philadelphia Eagles. After this Sunday’s visit by the Seahawks (6-6), the 49ers (9-3) face two more feathered friends – Dec. 17 at the Arizona Cardinals, Dec. 25 against the Baltimore Ravens — before a stretch run as empty nesters, so to speak. The 49ers are on a four-game win streak, and none was bigger than walloping the NFC-leading Eagles to pull within one game in the race for the No. 1 playoff seed.On the flip side, the Seahawks are on a three-game losing streak, with each of their past two losses coming on Thursday nights, the last being a 41-35 defeat at the Dallas Cowboys (9-3).TOP STORYLINESNEWFOUND ACCLAIM: Well look who’s the Super Bowl favorite: the 49ers. Editorial: California Legislature must act to support local news

Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 20:25:58 GMT

It may seem overly dramatic to say that democracy hangs in the balance, but it does. The local news business has been struggling for well over a decade as online search engines and social media have siphoned audience and revenue away from traditional publishers. The tech companies redistribute the content of local publishers and sell their own advertising against that content. That’s not fair, and it’s definitely not fair use.But somehow it’s still permitted as lawmakers continue debating how to stop the practice. To that end, the state Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing today on the California Journalism Preservation Act, a bill that would require companies such as Google and Facebook to reimburse news publishers for use of their content. To some, it may sound outlandish to suggest that search sites and social media companies should be expected to pay for the content they distribute. Google and Facebook and their parent companies Alphabet and Meta certainly think so, and t...

By Lauren Hepler | CalMattersCalifornia has a new unemployment and disability payment contractor after the state’s multi-billion-dollar pandemic fraud panic. The Employment Development Department hopes it will be the end of an era of brazen scams, which wreaked havoc for laid-off workers and fueled police busts involving stacks of ill-gotten debit cards issued at the department’s direction by then-contractor Bank of America.EDD said Monday that it plans to begin notifying 850,000 benefit recipients of the new payment provider: Money Network, an electronic payment company owned by finance tech company Fiserv.Money Network may sound familiar; it was also tapped by the federal government and Gov. Gavin Newsom to pay out COVID-era stimulus funds, which attracted its own waves of debit card scams.Money Network won the EDD contract after a competitive bidding process. It comes as the agency embarks on a five-year, $1.2 billion tech overhaul known as EDDNext. The contract will primarily be p...

Sheffield United becomes 1st EPL team to fire coach as Heckingbottom departs. Wilder set for return

Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 20:25:58 GMT

Sheffield United became the first Premier League club to fire its manager this season, with Paul Heckingbottom losing his job on Tuesday with the team in last place after 14 games of its first campaign back in England’s top division. The club’s Saudi owner, Prince Abdullah Bin Mosaad Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, took the unusual step of announcing the departure of Heckingbottom on a radio station, telling talkSPORT in Britain that Chris Wilder — the manager when Sheffield United was last in the league in the 2020-21 season — has been brought back for a second spell in charge. The club then announced the firing in a statement, but did not confirm the hiring of Wilder — only saying that it hoped to have a new manager in place before the Premier League game against Liverpool on Wednesday.Heckingbottom’s final game in charge was the 5-0 loss at fellow promoted team Burnley on Saturday, which dropped Sheffield United to last place — where Burnley was at the start of the match — and four points f...
