JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Andrew Lester had already gone to bed when the doorbell rang a little before 10 p.m. He got up, grabbed a gun and went to check it out. Seeing a Black male appearing to pull the handle of the front door, police say the 84-year-old white man opened fire. No questions asked.Lester told police he believed someone was attempting to break into his house. That belief — though wrong — could become a defense as Lester faces charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action for shooting 16-year-old Ralph Yarl, an honor student who went to the wrong Kansas City address while attempting to pick up his younger siblings. The case, which has stirred outrage across the country, could shine a light on one of the most common self-defense policies in the U.S — the right to protect yourself in your home. Most states have some version of a “castle doctrine," either by law or court precedent, that says residents don't have to retreat when threatened in their ho...Continental League baseball stacked once again: A look at all 11 teams, plus players to watch

Of the 11 Class 5A baseball championships contested over the past 12 years, the Continental League’s won six of them, and appeared in eight title games overall. So the odds of a Continental League team playing for the crown on the final day of the season on June 3rd at All-Star Park are pretty high. As league play fires up this week, here’s a look at what is perennially the deepest and most talented conference in the state. While top-ranked Rocky Mountain and its Front Range League are to be respected, and the same for big-school king Cherry Creek and its Centennial League, the Continental slate is the top schedule to keep an eye on this spring.HeritageCoach: Jordan Johnson, 1st season (interim last year, 9th season at HHS)Record: 11-1The scoop: Heritage fell 6-4 in the regional championship to eventual state champion Broomfield last year, but the experience gained from 2022 is already translating to a hot start in 2023.Plus, Johnson brought in a local pitching guru, Larr...Kraken defenseman Vince Dunn thinks Cale Makar’s defense is undervalued entering Stanley Cup Playoff matchup

The Seattle Kraken’s top defenseman agrees with an idea the Avs have pondered. As Vince Dunn evaluated the challenges of matching up against Cale Makar in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, he made sure to highlight the Avalanche defenseman’s, well, actual defense.“He’s a very dynamic player back there not just offensively but defensively,” Dunn said before Game 1 Tuesday at Ball Arena. “A lot of the time when guys put up numbers, (people) don’t really look at the defensive part of the game for those players. But he does a solid job on both ends of the ice.”Which begs the question: What does Dunn consider to be the true nature of the Norris Trophy for best NHL defenseman?“Well, I think if you want to change the definition of what the trophy is, then it should only be how many points you’re getting — but the definition of the trophy is the best all-around defenseman,” Dunn told The Post. “And sometimes it’s jus...Pikes Peak summit builder accused by city of shoddy work at 14,000 feet

The City of Colorado Springs is countersuing the company that built a visitor center atop Pikes Peak, accusing it of doing shoddy work on a parking lot and wastewater system.GE Johnson, which is based in Colorado Springs and also built its U.S. Olympic Committee headquarters, was paid $60 million to bulldoze a summit house on Pikes Peak and create the 38,000-square-foot Summit Complex at an elevation of 14,115 feet. After three years of work, the complex opened in 2021 to much praise and fanfare.“The architecture, the look, the convenience, the feel are world-class,” Gov. Jared Polis said at the grand opening, “and that’s important because this is a world-class site.”But since then, GE Johnson and Colorado Springs have lobbed accusations back and forth. On March 8, the company sued the city, claiming the latter has refused to reimburse it for work delays that were caused by the city’s slowness and the pandemic. GE Johnson said its contract requires it be paid for expenses related to d...Driver who fled scene of shooting in Aurora and crashed dies at hospital, police say

Netflix announced Tuesday that it will end its DVDs-by-mail business on Sept. 29. After that, no more discs will be shipped in the once-ubiquitous red envelopes. My first reaction was: They still do this?My second was to recall how cool and convenient it once seemed to be able to order DVD rentals online and have them shipped straight to the house.Today, in the era of streaming video and pay-per-view, Netflix's DVD shipments seem almost quaint."Those iconic red envelopes changed the way people watched shows and movies at home -- and they paved the way for the shift to streaming," Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos said in a statement."We feel so privileged to have been able to share movie nights with our DVD members for so long, so proud of what our employees achieved and excited to continue pleasing entertainment fans for many more decades to come."Times change. And few things illustrate that as profoundly as the way technological advances keep reinventing businesses (hi, Amazon!).Separately,...Laces & Boh Doran Are Keeping the Spirit of the 90s Alive and Well With Their New Song “In My Room.”

With the upcoming launch of her Chelsea Boots made with cactus leather, she is shaking up the industry and putting her brand on the map.As a vegan since 2008, Desiree was disheartened by the widespread use of animal-derived leather in fashion, especially in footwear. Fueled by her love for shoes and a desire to create a more sustainable and compassionate alternative, she founded Voes & Co in 2022, and the rest is history in the making. What sets Voes & Co apart from other vegan footwear brands is their use of innovative and sustainable materials. The CEO of an Oakland-based firm is asking a San Mateo County judge to throw out certain sections of a complaint filed by the San Mateo County Community College District last month as part of its ongoing corruption crackdown, arguing the district’s allegations have “flung wildly and recklessly” and put his business at risk.Filed Feb. 8 in San Mateo County Superior Court, the complaint seeks damages from five contractors and consultants the college district worked with during the time Ron Galatolo was chancellor. Galatolo was charged with misappropriating public funds and tax evasion in 2022 following a corruption probe by the San Mateo County DA’s office. The suit names Allana, Buick & Bers, Inc., an Oakland company going on 36 years, and argues that the firm gave thousands of dollars worth of gifts from Galatolo in exchange for a contract to build a solar farm at Cañada College in 2013, which a corruption probe by the DA’s office contends was rife with financial abuse. The distri...Latest news
