Mayor Mike Coffman contributes $10,000 to campaign to broaden the powers of Aurora mayor’s office The campaign for a proposed ballot measure that would give more authority to the Aurora mayor’s office has heated up in recent weeks, and public records released Monday show Mayor Mike Coffman contributed $10,000 to the effort. The “Term Limits and Empowering the Mayor For A Better Aurora” campaign, initially only called “Term Limits for a Better Aurora,” submitted its first campaign finance report by the Monday night deadline, detailing contributions to the initiative. Coffman has not returned requests for comment, but he told The Denver Post in an interview in July that he didn’t want to reveal how much he’d donated to the campaign “because that gets into strategy.”Last week, Mayor Mike Coffman admitted to backing the initiative to change Aurora’s form of government after previously avoiding discussing his role in the “citizen-led” effort that opponents have claimed has been explained to voters in a disingenuou...

Peach cobbler as you’ve never seen it Whether it’s a fancy apple tarte Tatin, a robust pineapple-ringed upside-down cake or a saucy flan, there’s something thrilling and suspenseful about turning your homemade dessert on its head.Any of these acrobatic dishes would taste fine served right-side up from the pan. But it’s that stunning reveal that adds a little drama and puts the fruit right on top, where it can shine. That’s the inspiration behind this upside-down peach cobbler. In traditional peach cobbler, you mix peaches with sugar and sometimes butter, hide them with rounds of biscuit dough, and bake. Spooned out of the baking dish and served in bowls, the cobbler’s modest simplicity is part of its charm. But, however delicious this might be, it doesn’t do much to show off the peaches.Throw in a gilding of caramel and an elegant flip, though, and you’ve got a confection to win oohs and aahs. Most of the effort of this recipe goes into simmering the caramel, which is what makes this truly special. Caramelizing sugar deepe...

Review: ‘Game Show’ in San Jose packed with charm (almost too packed) In the opening moments of San Jose Playhouse’s revival of “Thanks for Playing! The Game Show Show,” we meet the gallant Frankie, a kindly and eager woman who prances around the stage preaching the gospel of game shows. We are talking about the 1950s after all, when television was in its infancy and game shows delivered real-life melodramas attached to some hefty cash prizes. Those with hulking television consoles tuned in nightly to live vicariously through commoners whose lives were transformed in front of millions. It’s all so thrilling for Frankie, who is madly in love with shows of the quiz, deal, spin or bet variety. Frankie has surpassed queen for a day — she’s shooting for an eternal monarchy. If there can be Rice-a-Roni thrown in for good measure, even better. There is much that is charming about the Playhouse’s latest offering. However, the abundance of unfocused energy that lies within the play’s laborious book, as well as a nearly three-hour run time that could be chop...
