By STAN CHOE (AP Business Writer)NEW YORK (AP) — Another drop for stocks on Friday helped drag Wall Street to its first losing week in the last six.The S&P 500 fell 33.56, or 0.8%, to 4,348.33, pulling back further from last week when it reached its highest level in more than a year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 219.28, or 0.6%, to 33,727.43, and the Nasdaq composite sank 138.09, or 1%, to 13,492.52.Overseas markets also fell, while crude oil prices slipped amid worries that a stressed global economy may burn less fuel.Europe’s economy appears to be weaker than expected, according to a preliminary report measuring manufacturing and services businesses. That added to the week’s hesitance in markets, caused by a crank higher in interest rates by central banks around the world as they try to get high inflation under control. High rates drive down inflation by slowing the economy, which raises the risk of a recession.High interest rates in the United S...California woman, 77, dies after snorkeling accident in Hawaii

Caveat emptor. Let the buyer beware.Even if you’re a billionaire. As the world was gripped this week by the search for the Titan submersible, the tragic saga raised difficult questions about transparency and risk tolerance.“You know, at some point, safety just is pure waste,” Stockton Rush, the chief executive of deep-sea exploration company OceanGate Expeditions, told CBS. (Greg Gilbert/The Seattle Times via AP)We have heard two narratives. First, that the passengers understood they were taking risks climbing into a 22-foot vessel to dive 13,000 feet into the Atlantic Ocean. Second, that Stockton Rush, the chief executive of deep-sea exploration company OceanGate Expeditions, in a quest for technical advancement, played fast and loose with safety. Those two narratives are not mutually exclusive. To a certain extent, they are both true. For the story of the five deaths as the Titan imploded — just as some experts had feared and warned — isn’t just a lesson about risk....Three teens arrested for car theft in San Mateo overnight Thursday

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Friday he supports the idea of expunging the two impeachments of Donald Trump as hard-right Republican allies of the former president introduce a pair of proposals to declare it as though the historic charges never happened.McCarthy told reporters that he agrees with Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Elise Stefanik who want to erase the charges against Trump from the former president’s impeachments of 2019 and 2021. “I think it is appropriate,” said McCarthy, the Republican from California. “Just as I thought before — that you should expunge it, because it never should have gone through.”Pressed on his views, McCarthy said he agreed with expunging both of Trump’s impeachments — the abuse of power charges in 2019 over pressing Ukraine’s president to dig up dirt on rival Joe Biden and the 2021 charge that Trump incited the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the Capitol as Trump supporters tried to overturn Biden’s election. In both cas...1st US charges against China-based companies accused of selling fentanyl chemicals filed

The synthetic opioid is considered exponentially more addictive than heroin and is now the leading cause of death for Americans ages 18 to 49.
