On June 13, Alex Cora shut down the idea of sending a struggling Triston Casas down to Triple-A Worcester to hone his craft. The 23-year-old rookie first baseman came into that day hitting .197 with a .683 OPS and 36 hits through his first 59 games. He entered Saturday, hitting .323 with a 1.008 OPS in 61 games since. On Saturday night in Kansas City, he went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs, two RBI, and a walk, helping the Red Sox snap their five-game losing streak with a 9-5 victory. The win was also Cora’s 432nd, tying predecessor John Farrell for sixth-most in franchise history.“At least for today, that was a good one,” the Red Sox manager told reporters.Scoring early and often was a welcome change after a long week full of staring up at early, steep deficits. Alex Verdugo led off the contest with a triple and scored on Rafael Devers’ double, putting the Red Sox on the board 1-0 immediately and setting the stage for the rookie first baseman to come through with another big hit.Ca...DJ Stewart, Mets fight back but fall short as JP Crawford, Mariners even series

The Mets fought back every step of the way on Saturday but couldn’t get over the hump. The AL West-leading Mariners’ offense proved to be too much to handle as the Amazins would fall 8-7 in the second of a three-game set.JP Crawford’s go-ahead solo homer in the top of the ninth off of Adam Ottavino proved to be the difference after the Mets erased two separate three-run deficits to no avail.DJ Stewart erased the first three-run deficit as his legend continues to grow late in this season. Stewart launched a three-run homer to dead center off of Mariners’ ace Luis Castillo in the bottom of the fourth with the Mets trailing 3-0.The 29-year-old’s season OPS is up to 1.010 in 38 games this season. Stewart has capitulated his way into conversations regarding the Mets’ future with his strong brief season.Castillo was roughed up a bit by Buck Showalter’s lineup. The right-hander tossed five innings allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out...Oswald Peraza, Yankees’ youngsters fuel offense in win over Astros to secure series victory

The Revolution went 1-1-1 in three games in eight days and will play the next three on the road beginning with Minnesota United FC on Sept. 9.Interim head coach Richie Williams (1-1-1) made his third straight MLS start as field manager in place of Bruce Arena, who remains on indefinite administrative leave pending an investigation by MLS for making “insensitive and inappropriate remarks.”“We should have gotten three points and at the end of the game we didn’t manage the game,” said Williams. “All we had to do was dribble ...Police evacuate North York church after bomb threat

FORT COLLINS — For a team with bowl game aspirations, Week 1 proved Colorado State still has a tall mountain to climb.Washington State rolled the Rams in the season opener on Saturday at Canvas Stadium, 50-24, in a game that wasn’t even as close as the score indicated.CSU’s offense showed few signs of life, while the defense recovered two fumbles but gave up way too many chunk passes and couldn’t stuff the run when they needed to.The end result was the same bland, uninspiring brand of football CSU’s played over its previous five seasons — all losing campaigns. For Rams fans looking for a silver lining in the start to Year 2 under coach Jay Norvell, they were hard to find.“That was disappointing, to say the least,” Norvell said. “I see a little bit of a lack of confidence from our guys, especially when things weren’t going our way.
