An initiative that would have asked Aurora voters to approve giving more power to the mayor won’t be making it on the 2023 ballot, proponents of the campaign announced Friday morning. The effort for the proposed measure was led by Mayor Mike Coffman, who contributed $10,000 to the campaign, but after a series of challenges from opponents, the “Term Limits & Empowering the Mayor for a Better Aurora” campaign announced it couldn’t meet the deadline to get onto the ballot.“Regrettably, the citizens of Aurora will not have the opportunity to express their preference for a strong mayor form of government and further restricting term limits in the upcoming November elections, as a result of legal technicalities and opposition tactics,” spokesperson Natela Manuntseva said in a written statement. The deadline for local election issues to be certified to the county clerk is Sept. 8, which means ballot initiatives have to be finalized at least 30 days in advance. But there...Opinion: We are here to care for the animals “no-kill” shelters turn away
Published Wed, 27 Nov 2024 08:51:07 GMT
There is popular terminology used in animal welfare that is particularly divisive and disturbing. When you hear the term “no-kill” shelter, you probably assume that shelter is doing the best thing for the animals in its care. What you might not know is that “no-kill” policies don’t guarantee animals receive the best treatment or even prevent them from dying. Instead, these shelters can simply turn the neediest animals away, leaving another kind of shelter and its employees to deal with the worst cases of sick and injured animals and horrific cases of abuse and neglect that often result in severe behavioral problems. The shelters that operate as a safety net for these animals are called “open admission” shelters. What’s the difference? Typically, a “no-kill” shelter has the luxury to choose which animals they accept. When animals are unadoptable, or space is limited, they can be turned away from “no kill” shelters. However, those animals won’t be turned away from an “open-admission” she...Jack-knifed semitruck leads to extended road closure in Commerce City

For Sean Payton, the Broncos’ preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams is important for a number of reasons — not all of which have to do with what happens on the field.Saturday will not only be Payton’s first time coaching in front of Broncos fans at Empower Field at Mile High since he was hired, but an opportunity for new team members to get a feel for the stadium, locker room and, yes, how to get there.“We all like routine, so once you do it, you’re used to it,” Payton said.Providing another glimpse inside the mind of the detail-oriented head coach, Payton went all the way back to his first season in New Orleans to illustrate the importance of such routine. It was 2006, and the Saints were about to play their first home game of the season when quarterback Drew Brees was stuck in traffic two hours before kick-off. Payton said Brees had to get sheriffs to escort him, but when he arrived at the stadium, his car got stuck in the parking garage. “You can’t ...What your poop color can say about your health

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer for how often you should poop, but when it comes to what color your stool should be, expert consensus is much narrower. And deviations from it can be a cause for concern.“The most common color is brown, shades of brown,” said Dr. Mark Corkins, division chief of pediatric gastroenterology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. The brown comes from the breakdown of bilirubin, a pigment created when old blood cells break down in the liver, and bile, which is typically dark brown or green and is made by the liver to aid in fat digestion, according to McGill University’s Office for Science and Society. When bilirubin and bile are secreted in the small intestine during digestion, they ultimately turn the poop brown. This physiological process is also the reason why green is the second most common poop color.Green stools can mean food moved through the GI tract rapidly, so the green bile in the poop is still in its original form and hasn’...Carlos Santana apologizes for anti-trans comments he made during a recent concert

By Alli Rosenbloom | CNNCarlos Santana faced criticism on Thursday when a video of the musician making anti-transgender comments during a concert in New Jersey in July resurfaced on social media.“When God made you and me, before we came out of the womb, you know who you are and what you are,” the guitarist is seen saying in the clip.He continued, “Later on when you grow up, and you see things and you start believing that you could be something that sounds good but you know it ain’t right, because a woman is a woman and a man is a man — that’s it.”“Whatever you wanna do in the closet, that’s your business, I’m OK with that,” Santana added, before mentioning his closeness to his “brother Dave Chapelle,” who also faced criticism for anti-LGBTQ comments made in his 2021 Netflix comedy special “The Closer.”The criticism Santana faced on Thursday prompted the “Smooth” singer to release a statement on his Facebook page, where he wrote, “I am sorry for my insensitive comments.”“They don’t r...Wildfire map: More evacuations for Smith River, Happy Camp fires
