Valor Christian hockey riding high as sport’s popularity grows at high school level in Colorado: “Each year it gets better”

George Gwozdecky was asked to reflect on the growth of Valor Christian hockey. The coach responded with a bemused smile and an anecdote from the 2015-16 season, his first at the school.“I was so naïve, I didn’t know what I didn’t know,” Gwozdecky said. “I remember my wife asking me after that first week of practice, ‘Is this something you really want to do?’ Because I would explain to her some of the experiences that were happening at practice.“There were things that I had never experienced before. One player wanted to try out to be a defenseman and he couldn’t skate backwards. I had to explain to him that one of the skills that you have to have as a defenseman is the ability to skate backwards.”Gwozdecky paused for a moment, gathering his thoughts, and then continued.“From that point to where we are right now — we can all skate backwards, by the way — we have been able to become more competitive every year. I have been proud of what these guys hav...Broncos Mailbag: Do the recent offensive struggles foretell the end of the road for Russell Wilson in Denver?

Denver Post Broncos writer Parker Gabriel posts his Broncos Mailbag weekly during the season and periodically during the offseason. Click here to submit a question.Hi Parker! Again, thanks again for all of your insights into the Broncos. With that, I am starting a new club: G.R.O.W. — Get Rid Of Wilson! The offense needs to revolve around the quarterback and Russell Wilson is not looking very good. Yes, he had two drives for touchdowns at the end of the game, but if he had played like that the whole game then all would be OK. He seems to not see open receivers, looks afraid to make any mistakes, and is just going through the motions. If he is let go this off season, which I do hope, will George Paton be held accountable for this huge mistake, giving up a lot for basically nothing? Again, I have never been a fan of Wilson, but I was rooting for him when we traded for him, but now it is scary to think about him behind center going into the future.— Del, LamarHey Del, certa...Opinion: Kicking Trump off the Colorado ballot will destroy democracy in the name of saving it

In ruling that former President Donald Trump should be removed from the primary ballot, the Colorado Supreme Court furthers and promotes the legal madness, while pretending to defend Democracy. In the opinion, the majority states, “We are also cognizant that we travel in uncharted territory…” One might ask if, upon finding themselves in “uncharted territory,” they just happened to pause and reflect on over a thousand of years of Western jurisprudence, and at least ponder the idea of presumed innocence until proven guilty? Obviously, they did not. It’s important to note that this is the same court who, in 2016, could not even find it in themselves to bother taking up the Masterpiece Cakeshop case. That case went to the SCOTUS, who slapped down the Colorado Appeals Court, in a 7-2 ruling. To get a sense of how ridiculous and dangerous the Colorado Supreme Court ruling was, let’s review a few of its flaws.First, the court continues the perversion of historical ideas. Until three years ag...16-year-old boy fatally shot during altercation in Compton; gunman at large

SANTA CRUZ — The Santa Cruz Fire Department is investigating an early morning fire at the former Garfield Park Community Church as arson, a department official said Tuesday. Thanks to observant neighbors, firefighters were called at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday to the Errett Circle facility at the center of the Garfield Park or “Circles” neighborhood for reports of smoke and flames, Battalion Chief Josh Coleman wrote in a department release. There, they found heavy smoke issuing from the property’s most westerly structure. Firefighters made a forced entry through fencing and doors surrounding the building and used multiple hoses for an aggressive interior attack on the fire, according to Coleman.Firefighters found multiple fires found in various locations within the building. Coleman credited community members’ early reports of the fire for assisting firefighters in making a quick fire attack “before it evolved into a more complex and dangerous incident.” The fires did an estimated $105,000 in ...Goldberg: What’s driving former progressives to the right?

In a new essay in the progressive magazine In These Times, writers Kathryn Joyce and Jeff Sharlet grapple with the contemporary version of an old phenomenon: erstwhile leftists decamping to the right. There have been plenty of high-profile defectors from the left in recent years, among them comedian Russell Brand; environmentalist-turned-conspiracy-theorist Robert F. Kennedy Jr.; and journalist Matt Taibbi, a onetime scourge of Wall Street, who was recently one of the winners of a $100,000 prize from the ultraconservative Young America’s Foundation. What gives this migration political significance, however, are the ordinary people following them, casting off what they view as a censorious liberalism for a movement that doesn’t ask anyone to “do the work” or “check your privilege.” Joyce and Sharlet write, “We, the authors of this article, each count such losses in our own lives, and maybe you do, too: friends you struggle to hold onto despite their growing allegiance to terrifying id...‘Not your grandparents’ post office:’ The future USPS being tested in California

When off-duty Los Angeles Police Department Officer Salvador Sanchez fatally shot 32-year-old Kenneth French and wounded his parents after the intellectually disabled man slugged Sanchez in the deli of the Costco in Corona in 2019, Sanchez not only panicked, he also fabricated a narrative intended to show he acted reasonably and to therefore avoid criminal charges, a prosecutor said Tuesday, Dec. 26.Videos of Sanchez’s statements to authorities both immediately after the shooting and two months later revealed his “lies,” Deputy state Attorney General Mike Murphy said during closing arguments of Sanchez’s voluntary manslaughter trial at the Larson Justice Center in Indio.Sanchez is also on trial on two counts of assault with a firearm for wounding Russell and Paola French. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.“He told police he had been shot in the head, he believed Kenneth was hunkered down and he believed Kenneth was armed with a gun. But none of those beliefs was true. Nor we...Latest news
