Everton beats struggling Chelsea 2-0 to move 4 points clear of Premier League’s relegation zone LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Everton moved four points clear of the Premier League’s relegation zone by beating Chelsea 2-0 on Sunday for a third straight win.The latest victory may not have had the flourish of Thursday’s 3-0 triumph over Newcastle at Goodison Park when the hosts scored all of their goals in the last 11 minutes, but the manner of victory would have been no less pleasing to Everton manager Sean Dyche.Having kept Chelsea at bay relatively comfortably, Everton struck through Abdoulaye Doucoure in the 54th minute and substitute Lewis Dobbin drilled home his first Premier League goal in stoppage time as Dyche’s team continued its recovery from a 10-point deduction for financial mismanagement.Chelsea had 71% possession but familiar failings up front cost the visitors, who have now won just twice in eight league games. One downside to the afternoon for Everton was fifth bookings of the season for defender Jarrad Branthwaite and midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who w...

Nice beats Reims 2-1 to take back 2nd place in Ligue 1 NICE, France (AP) — Ivory Coast forward Jeremie Boga scored the winner as Nice beat Reims 2-1 to take back second place in the French league on Sunday. Boga picked his spot from 18 yards to unleash a low strike that Reims goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf palmed into his own net in the 82nd minute. Nice is known for patiently probing for an opening by swapping passes in its own half. But goalkeeper Marcin Bulka diverted from the script with a long punt in the 55th. The Reims defense cleared the ball into the path of Gaetan Laborde, who drove forward to open the scoring for Nice with a shot off the underside of the bar. Reims captain Yunis Abdelhamid met a cross from Junya Ito to equalize with a downward header in the 78th. Ito also hit the woodwork with an effort in the 67th. “I think we were a bit too excited sometimes,” Nice center back Dante told Amazon Prime Video. “We will have to correct that for the next games so that we can have more control.” Nice has built its success on a solid de...

The best came after 25 minutes when Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface shot straight at Stuttgart goalkeeper Alexander Nübel before Serhou Guirassy failed to beat Lukas Hradecky in a one-on-one at the other end.Stuttgart’s Josha Vagnoman crossed for Chris Führich to finally break the deadlock in the 40th minute.Stuttgart finished the first half with 18 shots at goa...

UN agency warns of Afghans dying in harsh winter if there’s no proper shelter after leaving Pakistan KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The U.N. refugee agency has warned that Afghans could die in harsh winter conditions if they don’t get adequate shelter once they cross the border from Pakistan. Almost half a million Afghans have left Pakistan since early October, when the Islamabad government announced it would arrest and deport foreigners it said were in the country illegally. The overwhelming majority of them are from neighboring Afghanistan, though Islamabad insists the policy doesn’t target a specific nationality. The forced returns are piling pressure on Afghanistan and aid agencies, which are providing the bulk of essential services like health care. Freezing temperatures are setting in and conditions at the border remain dire.“Many Afghan returnees are vulnerable, including women and children, who could lose their lives in a harsh winter if left without adequate shelter,” the U.N. refugee agency said in a report published Friday. “People arriving at the border are exhausted and req...
