KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Attorneys for the state of Missouri were back in court Monday to fight against efforts to allow proposed initiative petitions on the ballot next November to make abortion legal again. After a circuit court judge rewrote what he called "problematic" language last month, the state appealed the ruling, sending the case to the Western District Court of Appeals in Kansas City."The trial court strayed from its legitimate role when it decided to rewrite every single word of every single statement," Deputy Attorney General Josh Divine told the three-judge panel. "Trial courts can only modify the language, not rewrite it entirely. Here, the trial court violated all those rules and instead of taking a scalpel, took a butcher knife to the language."It's been a constant court battle over initiative petitions asking voters if abortion rights should be restored.Supporters of the referendum accuse Ashcroft of writing misleading ballot summary language, which is why the American C...Prosecutors wonder about other victims after deathbed scam

CLAYTON, Mo. – St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell made a potentially game-changing political announcement on Monday, dropping his bid to unseat incumbent Missouri Republican Josh Hawley for his U.S. Senate seat.Democrat U.S. Senate candidate Lucas Kunce has emerged as a heavy favorite in the August primary over Bell, with a decisive fundraising edge.Instead, Bell declared his intention to run for the U.S. House seat of a fellow Democrat, Congresswoman Cori Bush of St. Louis. It’s been nearly five months since Bell announced his Senate campaign. As he campaigned around the state, he said fellow Democrats made it clear that although he wanted to run for the Senate, they needed him to run against the progressive Bush.“Even when I would be in places like Kansas City, I would hear those calls,” he said.A growing number of Democrats take issue with Bush’s progressive stances.”Bush notably voted against President Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill in 2021, which is expected to b...Nuggets hold off pesky Jazz, 110-102, to open season 4-0

If a championship hangover is in the offing for the Nuggets, it hasn’t shown up yet. While their 110-102 victory over Utah Monday night wasn’t always pretty, the Nuggets took care of business when it counted and have opened the season 4-0 for the sixth time in franchise history and the first time since 2018.Through the first four games, Denver has trailed for just four minutes, 33 seconds, of play. The Nuggets trailed for only 16 seconds Monday night, 3-2, in the opening minute of the game. The Nuggets, playing back-to-back games after blowing out the Thunder in Oklahoma City on Sunday, seemed on the verge of blowing out Utah a number of times but never put together a sustained run, in part because their free-throw shooting (7 for 17) was so bad.Nonetheless, Denver’s defense had the Jazz out of tune most of the game, holding them to 42.9% shooting and blocking eight shots.Nikola Jokic and Aaron Gordon, both playing in their 600th career game, led the way for Denver, ...Independence Pass closed for season following significant early snowfall

PHOENIX (AP) — Christian Walker ran through a stop sign and right into a costly out in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 3-1 loss to the Texas Rangers in Game 3 of the World Series. Missing a late signal from third base coach Tony Perezchica, Walker was thrown out at the plate by a perfect throw from right fielder Adolis García in the second inning Monday night. Walker — 3 for 31 since the start of the NL Championship Series entering Game 3 — was encouraged by a standing ovation when he came to bat and answered with Arizona’s first hit off Texas starter Max Scherzer. His double off the base of the wall in right-center had Arizona primed to snap a scoreless tie, especially when Tommy Phan followed with a single to right.Perezchica intially waved for Walker to turn for home. Walker put his head down to touch third base and didn’t see Perezchica change the signal to stop as he rounded the bag.
