Bay Area breweries: Here’s what to look for in 2024

Bay Area breweries: Here’s what to look for in 2024 Last year felt the closest to normal since the pandemic began in 2020, but most craft breweries continued to struggle mightily. One lingering aftereffect of the pandemic is that many people are going out to eat and drink less frequently than they once did. While that may be less of a problem for breweries that can or bottle their beer, it’s been rough on brewpubs and keg-only breweries, and it’s not doing bars and brewery taprooms any favors. And ongoing issues with supply chains and the cost of ingredients continue to raise the price of your pint, further slowing sales.Drinkers are also shifting loyalties. Many people, especially younger adults, are drinking less, and when they do drink, they often turn to hard seltzer, cider, cocktails — including ready-to-drink ones — and craft spirts. So retailers are allocating less space for beer in stores, which then makes it harder for breweries to find a place to sell their beer.As a result, several breweries in the Bay Area have closed or ...

If you can only find very large sweet potatoes, simply bake two instead of four.Serve as a lunch, brunch or dinner — and remember, sometimes food tastes best eaten right off the sheet pan.Baked Cumin-Lime Sweet Potatoes with Radish SlawServes 4INGREDIENTS1 tablespoon olive oil½ teaspoon ground cuminZest from 1 limeCoarse (or flaked) sea salt and pepper4 small sweet potatoes5 cups shredded cabbage2 cups thinly sliced radish or purpl...

Critics say politics is crippling Oakland police chief search as process starts over

Critics say politics is crippling Oakland police chief search as process starts over OAKLAND — Nearly a year after the city’s last police chief was placed on leave ahead of his eventual firing, the two political forces responsible for replacing him still do not appear to be on the same page. One of those power players, a police oversight body comprised of civilian volunteers, is once again seeking applications for the chief job instead of drawing from an existing applicant pool — effectively rebooting a search that was expected to conclude sometime around the new year but now won’t wrap up until at least March. The reset came days after Mayor Sheng Thao, who will make the decision, outright rejected a controversial shortlist of three finalists for the job that the civilian Oakland Police Commission had presented to her office — further illustrating a strained dynamic between the two parties. It is yet another hitch in an increasingly splintered recruitment process that is quickly approaching the same length of time it took to hire the last...
