Timberwolves get back on track with win over Lakers

Timberwolves get back on track with win over Lakers The mark of a great team: the Timberwolves have yet to allow one shortcoming to lead to another this season.Twenty-seven games into the season, Minnesota is the only team in the NBA yet to lose consecutive games after it followed Wednesday’s loss in Philadelphia with a 118-111 victory over the Lakers at Target Center. The Wolves played with their food to some degree Thursday, as the defense wasn’t as sharp as usual, particularly at home. That could be linked to Minnesota playing the night prior, but the same thing was true for the Lakers, who were sans LeBron James. For the second straight night, an opposing center had his way with Minnesota. One night after Joel Embiid scored 51 against the Wolves, Anthony Davis hit one mid-range after another to the tune of 31 points and eight rebounds. He was the primary reason the Lakers (15-14) — who have lost four straight games and five of their six contests since winning the In-Season Tournament — were able to stay within five with...

Men’s basketball: Balanced approach aids Gophers in 80-63 win over Ball State Gophers guard Cam Christie hit a contested 3-pointer to beat the shot clock early in Thursday’s game against Ball State. On the next possession, he had a better look from deep but passed it up and found Josh Ola-Joseph for an easier layup.Head coach Ben Johnson appreciated the smart play, pointing at his true freshman after the play.Christie’s assist, part of a career-high six, contributed to the Gophers’ hot start in an 80-63 win over Ball State at Williams Arena.“He’s got a really good feel,” Johnson said about Christie postgame. “You want to reward. Sometimes it doesn’t get the highlight or the recognition that it (deserves). Just that simple play, especially a guy that just made one, passing one up. It gives confidence to teammates, too.”The Gophers (9-3) extended their winning streak to four, while Ball State (8-4) lost its second consecutive.Minnesota, a 12-point favorite, didn’t put away Ball State for good until late in the game, des...

LOUIS – The abrupt closure of one of the largest nursing homes in the St. Louis area has left 170 residents, workers and their families with several questions. Broncos OC Joe Lombardi’s advice for Russell Wilson after Sean Payton sideline dust-up: “What goes on on game day stays on game day” Joe Lombardi has worked for Sean Payton longer than almost anybody in football. The Broncos offensive coordinator is in his 13th season as an assistant in some capacity on a Payton coaching staff. He’s heard probably most or all of the stories. He’s seen the magic at work. He’s been a part of a Super Bowl team, some much leaner years, Payton’s year suspended by the NFL and much more. He’s undoubtedly been yelled at. A lot.Maybe it’s no surprise, then, that he laughed off the story this week that’s carried on after NFL Network cameras on Saturday night caught Payton reaming quarterback Russell Wilson on the sideline after a second-half sequence in which Denver stalled out on the goal line.“I think early on, (you learn) game days are like Vegas,” Lombardi said Thursday. “What goes on on game day stays on game day. It’s an emotional time and you can’t take things personal. We’ve all been on the end of that and we’ve all been Sean as well, yelling at somebody. I don’t think it’s near...
