A CU Boulder nanoengineer teamed up with Rihanna’s tattoo artist to make ink that can be turned on and off

A CU Boulder nanoengineer teamed up with Rihanna’s tattoo artist to make ink that can be turned on and off BOULDER — Mad-scientist kind of moments happen fairly often for nanoengineer Carson Bruns. A few months ago in his lab at the University of Colorado Boulder, he tested his latest invention on his own arm and asked a colleague for help.“We were like, ‘OK, we’re going to tattoo ourselves. Can you help us today?’” he said. The tattoo is like a freckle, a little blue dot. But he can turn it on and off. Like the way a mood ring changes color with temperature, this tattoo changes with light: Ultraviolet light to turn it on, daylight (or even a flashlight) to turn it off.“You can go to court and turn it off, and then go to the party and turn it on. And then go to Grandma’s house and turn it off,” said Bruns, who is affiliated with the university’s ATLAS Institute, which prides itself on fostering out-of-the-box ideas.Bruns started a company with tattoo-artist-to-the-stars Keith “Bang Bang” McCurdy, along with a former doctoral student. Early next year, they plan to release their first...

Denver to pay $4.7 million to protesters in largest settlement stemming from 2020 demonstrations The Denver City Council is expected to approve a $4.7 million settlement Monday to compensate protesters for the Denver Police Department’s response to the racial justice demonstrations in the summer of 2020.The payment stems from a class-action claim over the arrests of protesters mostly for curfew violations. It is poised to be the largest settlement to date in a series of cases related to law enforcement officers’ actions in Denver during protests motivated by the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.A resolution approving the proposed settlement is on the agenda for the council’s 3:30 p.m. meeting. The class-action claim was lodged in a set of cases that separately led to a federal jury last year awarding $14 million to 12 protesters for excessive force. The jury found officers violated the civil rights of demonstrators who were hit by pepper balls and a bag filled with lead. The verdict and portions of that lawsuit, which include now-state Rep.
