LOS ANGELES (AP) — Berry Henson always imagined moments like this. He’s at the U.S. Open, playing practice rounds with Phil Mickelson and soaking up whatever information he can get for his first major championship against the best players in the world. He just didn’t imagine it would take him 20 years. He didn’t plan on playing on more than a dozen tours at home and abroad. He grew up near Palm Springs, went to college in San Diego and now has a home base in Thailand. He has a second job as an Uber driver. And on Thursday morning, at age 43, his name will be called on the 10th tee at Los Angeles Country Club to tee off in the U.S. Open.“I’m kind of starting my journey,” Henson said. “It sounds weird — 43, starting your journey — but I’ve never given up. I’ve always tried to get 1% better. That’s kind of been our motto. That’s the road I’m on right now. And it just happened a little bit later. And we’re just going to keep doin...Rahm moving on from shock of PGA Tour-LIV deal, preparing for U.S. Open

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Add Jon Rahm to the many PGA Tour players who were frustrated and surprised about last week’s announcement of a partnership between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, the primary funder of rival circuit LIV Golf.Rahm — the No. 2 player in the world entering this week’s U.S. Open — said before a practice round on Tuesday that he received plenty of texts after last week’s announcement but had no answers.“I thought my phone was going to catch on fire at one point,” Rahm said. “I think it was that day at one point I told (wife) Kelley I’m just going to throw my phone in the drawer and not look at it for the next four hours because I can’t deal with this anymore.“I want to have faith that this is the best thing for all of us, but it’s clear that that’s not the consensus. I think the general feeling is that a lot of people feel a bit of betrayal from management. I get the secrecy. It’s just not easy as a player that’s been involved, like ...New Jersey doctor who sexually abused patients has been threatened in jail, lawyers say

NEW YORK (AP) — A gynecologist accused of molesting hundreds of patients during a decadeslong career has faced threats and extortion in a federal jail by other inmates who know he was convicted of sex crimes, his lawyers said Tuesday in asking that he be sentenced to three years in prison, far less than the decades he could be forced to serve.Robert Hadden, 64, of Englewood, New Jersey, has been targeted in part because people at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn falsely believe he is a child molester, the lawyers wrote in a presentence submission in Manhattan federal court.Hadden was convicted in January after a two-week trial in which nine former patients told of being abused sexually during examinations, when they were most vulnerable. He is scheduled to be sentenced on July 24, though victims will be permitted to make statements on June 28. Since the trial, Hadden “has been repeatedly threatened with violence and forced to hand over his commissary items, from f...LSU’s Skenes closing in on strikeout record as Tigers head to College World Series

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — When LSU clinched its first trip to the College World Series in six years, it gave 6-foot-6, 247-pound right-hander Paul Skenes a chance to break an NCAA strikeout record that has stood for more than three decades.Skenes — who’ll likely make his next start Saturday night against Tennessee in Omaha, Nebraska — is 15 strikeouts from eclipsing former LSU star Ben McDonald’s 1989 mark of 202. “Obviously, that’s in the back of my mind,” said Skenes, who has averaged just more than 11 strikeouts per appearance this season. “But the fact that I get to pitch again with this team, with these boys on the biggest stage, that’s the coolest opportunity that I could have asked for.”If LSU wins at least twice in the CWS’s eight-team, double-elimination format, Skenes should get at least two starts.“I’m hoping for three,” Skenes said with a smile, referring to the maximum number of appearances he could make if LSU advances to the best-of-three championship ...Oil producers say tech will soon handle climate-wrecking fumes. US envoy Kerry says be skeptical

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — U.S. climate envoy John Kerry on Tuesday urged the world to be “very skeptical” about claims from oil and gas producers that emerging technology soon will allow people to adequately capture the climate-wrecking fumes emitted by their cars, planes and businesses. It’s “one big question mark,” Kerry told The Associated Press of the future viability of carbon-capture technology, a debate at the heart of global negotiations on cutting emissions to stave off the most disastrous scenarios of global warming. The International Energy Agency and increasing numbers of scientists, governments and global leaders and advocates are saying the only way to rein in climate change fast enough is to immediately stop drilling new oil and gas wells and sharply phase down existing drilling. Many oil companies and oil states are fighting the calls for production cuts, saying that still-emerging carbon-capture technology will come to the rescue. FORT JOHNSON, La. (AP) — A U.S. Army base in western Louisiana was renamed Tuesday to honor Sgt. William Henry Johnson, a Black hero of World War I who received the Medal of Honor nearly a century later. Fort Johnson had previously been named after a Confederate commander, Leonidas Polk. The renaming is part of the U.S. military’s efforts to address historic racial injustice — work that included changing the names of nine Army posts that commemorated Confederate officers. “Sgt. William Henry Johnson embodied the warrior spirit, and we are deeply honored to bear his name,” Brig. Gen. David Garner, the commanding general of the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Johnson, said in a post on Twitter. While serving on the front lines of France in 1918, Johnson fought off a German night raid near the Argonne Forest, according to the National Museum of the United States Army. Johnson was wounded 21 times while beating back the attacking forces. He also prevented a wounded Black comrade ...1 killed in I-25 shooting; northbound closed at 8th
