Education funding tops list at legislative breakfast with Prince William supervisors, School Board The Prince William Board of County Supervisors and School Board discussed 2024 legislative priorities with the Prince William state delegation Monday, emphasizing the need to improve funding for schools.Specifically, the discussion centered around the need to raise per pupil spending – and funding – in Prince William County. This issue was outlined in a report released earlier this year by the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission that evaluated the cost of education in Virginia and provided an assessment of the costs of the Standards of Quality.State Sen. Jeremy McPike, who represents the 29th District, implored everyone in the room to read and study the report, even to “tuck it underneath the pillow” as they sleep.“It should be one of the top priorities because education investment is one of the key things that we have fallen behind in,” McPike said.Education fundingThe Virginia General Assembly directed the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission to condu...

In coup-hit West Africa, regional leaders recognize Niger’s junta but seek fast return to democracy ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — West African heads of state on Sunday officially recognized the junta in power in Niger, but said their sanctions to reverse the July coup in the country would remain even as they initiate steps for a “short” period of transition to civilian rule.A team of heads of state would engage with the junta “to agree on a short transition program” as against the three years the soldiers earlier proposed, Omar Alieu Touray, president of the regional bloc of ECOWAS Commission, said at the bloc’s meeting in the Nigerian capital of Abuja. The recognition of the junta by the 15-member bloc ends hopes of any immediate reinstatement of Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum, who was deposed amid a surge of coups across West and Central Africa where there have been eight military takeovers since 2020. In the past month, the governments of Sierra Leone and Guinea-Bissau have also described political crises as attempted coups.“The heads of state have recognized that what has happened i...

In inaugural speech, Argentina’s Javier Milei prepares nation for painful shock adjustment BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — It wasn’t the most uplifting of inaugural addresses. We don’t have margin for sterile discussions. Our country demands action, and immediate action. The political class left the country at the brink of its biggest crisis in history,” he said in his inaugural address to thousands of supporters in the capital, Buenos Aires. “We don’t desire the hard decisions that will be need to be made in coming weeks, but lamentably they didn’t leave us any option.”South America’s second largest economy is suffering 143% annual inflation, the currency has plunged and four in 10 Argentines are impoverished. He’s back: Elon Musk returns Alex Jones to X Elon Musk has restored the X account of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, pointing to a poll on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter that came out in favor of the Infowars host who repeatedly called the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting a hoax.It poses new uncertainty for advertisers, who have fled X over concerns about hate speech appearing alongside their ads, and is the latest divisive public personality to get back their banned account.Musk posted a poll on Saturday asking if Jones should be reinstated, with the results showing 70% of those who responded in favor. Early Sunday, Musk tweeted, “The people have spoken and so it shall be.”A few hours later, Jones’ posts were visible again and he retweeted a post about his video game. He and his Infowars show had been permanently banned in 2018 for abusive behavior.Musk, who has described himself as a free speech absolutist, said the move was about protecting those rights. Column: The White Sox are moving — eventually. And Christopher Morel’s value to the Cubs. Highlights from a sleepy winter meetings. The loudest noise at the 2023 MLB winter meetings came on Day 1 when a Japanese reporter fell asleep on his laptop in the media room and snored at a decibel level rivaling a heavy metal band in a small club. With no blockbuster trades or mega signings to announce during the meetings — the Juan Soto deal came to light late Wednesday night — baseball had to resort to other news, including the Hall of Fame election of manager Jim Leyland, to keep the annual three-day meetings from being a complete snoozefest.Even an incident of Cubs President Jed Hoyer snapping at USA Today reporter Bob Nightengale over a social media post drew media attention back in Chicago, showing how times have changed. Executives snapping at reporters is a story as old as the game itself. Only in this age is it considered newsworthy enough to be dissected on sports-talk radio. So nothing much happened, and a ton of media had to have something to write and talk about after spending money to come to the G...
