By Al BeeberSouthern Alberta NewspapersWhen Rachael Thomas looks at the year that 2023 was, the Conservative MP for Lethbridge sees both accomplishments and concerns.Thomas, in a year-end interview with Southern Alberta Newspapers recently, discussed the highs and lows of 2023.“This was the first full year with a new Conservative party leader at the helm,” said Thomas, noting “I’m certainly very impressed with Pierre Poilevre as our leader. It’s been a pleasure to serve under him. I appreciate his vision for Canada. I appreciate that he’s a hard worker and I appreciate that he has a plan to bring Canadians back into a place of prosperity.”Thomas said “under his leadership, we’ve enjoyed tremendous unity and it’s been really energizing to have him as leader. Mayor Lyndsay Montina noted that as they have already gone through multiple budget meetings and processes, nothing in there was a “surprise” at this point.For the 2024 budget, there is a net taxation increase of 6.72 per cent. BOLTON, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Warren County Department of Public Works is beginning work on an emergency culvert replacement in the Town of Bolton. Riverbank Road, also known as County Route 11, is closed effective Thursday, January 4. Get the latest news, weather, sports and entertainment delivered right to your inbox! MISSOURI - Missouri U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer, who represents Jefferson City and some parts of the St. Louis metro, will retire from office at the end of the 2024 session. Luetkemeyer has represented the 3rd Congressional District of Missouri in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2009. The suspect in the fatal shooting of a 29-year-old man at a Metro station in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Los Angeles last week has been arrested and charged with murder, police said Thursday.The victim, identified as Adrian Gibbs, was shot at the Metro station located at Slauson Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard on Dec. 30.Gibbs, who had been shot in the back, was transported to a local hospital where he later died.Investigators later identified 24-year-old Dwight Panton as the suspect and arrested him in the area of 50th Street and 9th Avenue on New Year's Day."Panton was wearing the same clothing worn by the suspect during the murder and was in possession of a handgun," the Los Angeles Police Department stated in a news release.He was charged with murder two days later by the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office.The DA also filed two counts of attempted murder and one count of assault with a firearm against Panton. A 20-year-old woman has been arrested in the hit-and-run death of a pedestrian in Pomona that occurred less than 90 minutes into the new year.Isabella Ortega was taken into custody on Tuesday, a day after the death of 23-year-old Khailyn Garcia Sanchez, the Pomona Police Department said in a news release. According to police, Sanchez was crossing Garey Avenue near Center Street at 1:27 a.m. when she was hit by a vehicle that then fled the scene.Sanchez was found in the roadway and taken to a local hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.According to jail records, Ortega was arrested at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday and booked at the Pomona Police Department at about 4 p.m. that afternoon.She is being held in lieu of $80,000 bail and had an appearance at Pomona Superior Court scheduled for Thursday.Anyone with information is asked to call police at 909-622-1241.
