New dataset helps discern climate changes from local weather

ST. LOUIS -- A first-of-its kind dataset is now available to the earth system science community. CONUS 404 is a high-resolution weather simulation that spans more than four decades over the continental United States.Scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research partnered with the US Geological Survey to develop this new resource, allowing researchers to look at weather on local scales but over a climate timescale. The simulation took an entire year on a supercomputer. A scientist on the project, Andreas Prein, says there are hundreds of applications for this data. He’s personally interested in how extremes are changing over time."I looked at extreme rainfall and how it’s changing. I looked at the extreme winds and how they were changing. How does snowpack in the western US change over time?" said Prein. The 40-year dataset allows scientists to discern changes in climate versus daily weather. This makes it easier to understand how these changes could impact a region. The e...Broncos WR Jerry Jeudy, LG Ben Powers cleared to play Sunday night vs. Vikings; S P.J. Locke out with ankle injury

The Riverside County District Attorney's Office is raising the alarm after the California Board of Parole Hearings agreed to release a convicted rapist after serving 29 years of his 170-year sentence.Cody Woodsen Klemp, 67, was convicted in 1994 of 40 felonies involving the repeated rape of his 14-year-old niece, who was placed in his care despite previous rape convictions, the D.A.'s Office says. The child eventually escaped Klemp's home in Moreno Valley and informed her therapist of her abuse, which led to a criminal investigation. Klemp, who was in custody on domestic violence charges at the time, was then charged with multiple counts of sexual abuse. He was sentenced to 170 years in prison, but is eligible for parole due to his age and time served as part of the Elderly Parole Program. The program allows special consideration be given to an inmate's age, time served or diminished physical condition when determining if they are likely to commit additional violent crimes in the futu...What we know, and still don't know, about Maleesa Mooney's murder

On Friday, the California Fish and Wildlife Department ordered another delay in the commercial Dungeness crab fishing season — the second so far this winter. The risk of whales becoming tangled in crab fishing gear remains high for most of the coastal waters from the Mendocino County line south to the Mexican border, director Charlton H. Bonham announced. In the far north, where crabbing was supposed to be allowed starting Dec. 1, there’s a second issue: Testing in Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte counties revealed poor crab meat quality. The next assessment will take place on or around Dec. 7. The earliest that commercial crabbing could begin in the far north would be Dec. 16, state officials said. Also Friday, the restrictions on recreational crabbers, who had been given the go-ahead in many parts of the state so long as they used hoop nets and crab snares and not traps, were extended to include those far north counties. That new restriction goes into effect Nov. 26.This...El Sobrante: Woman convicted of zip-tying man’s neck, leaving him to die in mobile home

Dungan’s attorney argued at trial that prosecutors failed to prove she was the killer. Prosecutors argued that Dungan’s DNA found on the zip-ties proved that she was.The investigation started his landlord told police he was concerned that Hendrix hadn’t been heard from for days. Hendrix’s decomposing body was found in his motorhome on the 400 block of Appian Way in El Sobrante. His killer beat him in the head with a blunt object, knocking him unconscious, then strangled him with zip ties and left them affixed to his throat, and stacked random objects on top of his body, police said at the time.Police believe he was ki...Judge orders teens held without bail in classmate’s killing

The teens are due back in court next week. The students each face one count of murder but have not been formally charged, court records show. The Associated Press is not naming them because they are juveniles. The other four suspects are awaiting separate hearings since they are all under the age of 16.Earlier this week, Las Vegas police announced the arrests of the eight students, between the ages of 13 and 17, in connection with the Nov. 1 brawl that left 17-year-old Jonathan Lewis Jr. dead.Authorities have said students at Rancho High School in eastern Las Vegas had agreed to meet afte...49ers’ Steve Wilks switch from coaches box to sideline a rousing success

SANTA CLARA — Steve Wilks rejects the premise that his journey from coaches box to the sideline was the impetus for a defensive recovery for the 49ers.The 49ers’ defensive coordinator coached from the field for the first time with the 49ers, and the result was a 34-3 win over Jacksonville during which they gave up the fewest points since Pittsburgh scored seven points in the regular-season opener. The 49ers sacked Trevor Lawrence five times and surrendered 221 yards, their second-lowest total of the season other than giving up 197 against Dallas in Week 5. That was the last game the 49ers won before snapping a three-game losing streak.Wilks will be back on the sideline Sunday when the 49ers (6-3) host Tampa Bay (4-5) at Levi’s Stadium.Having downplayed the change in advance, Wilks did so again in the aftermath.“Believe me, that wasn’t nowhere near the reason why,” Wilks said Thursday. “We’ve got good players and me being down on the sid...Latest news
