AUSTIN (KXAN) -- There are more than 80 items on this week's Austin City Council agenda. Here's some of what we're watching. 'Safe Place' program expansionCouncil Member José Velásquez introduced a resolution that would enroll all city recreation centers and public libraries in the Austin Police Department's 'Safe Place' program and require training of staff at those locations. The 'Safe Place' program was first created in Seattle as an attempt to combat the lack of reporting of anti-LGBTQ+ crimes. It has since expanded to the reporting of all bias crimes. "Businesses that participate place an easily recognizable decal at their entrances. This symbol is a signal for victims of hate crimes and bias incidents that this location has partnered with the police, will call 911 on their behalf and allow them a safe place stay to on the premises until the police arrive," the Austin Police Department's website says. According to council documents, Velásquez hopes expanding the progr...Climate change not part of LCRA water plan. KXAN investigation may change that

Investigative Summary: Central Texas residents trust that when they turn on their faucets, they will have water, even as our population booms and climate change alters weather patterns. KXAN found the Lower Colorado River Authority, which manages the water supply for more than one million residents, is only planning based on the worst drought in our history — not on more severe droughts that the State Climatologist expects in the future. But during our months-long investigation, the LCRA changed course.AUSTIN (KXAN) — Karen Bruett has called Lake Travis home since 1999.“This lake is more than a play thing," Bruett said, of the body of water just northwest of Austin. "This lake is actually our drinking water. We have that visceral experience of turning on our tap and knowing that this is what’s supplying it.” Lake Travis, as seen from Karen Bruett's neighborhood in Spicewood Apr. 11 (KXAN Photo/David Yeomans) In that time, she has seen the populat...Airport looks to double current contract with design firm for airport expansion

Editor's note: A previous version of this story said city council was set to authorize "the remaining $27 million of its $52 million contract with architectural design firm, HNTB Corporation." The story has been updated to reflect that the $27 million will actually be an increase of the current contract. AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The Austin airport is moving on to phase two of its design process in the airport expansion program, and is more than doubling its contract with the design firm. Airport staff will ask city council to increase its current contract with architectural design firm, HNTB Corporation, by an additional $27 million for a total of $52 million. Council authorized the original $25 million contract back in December of 2021. HNTB is consulting the airport on how it can expand, as the city continues to grow and the need for a bigger airport becomes more apparent. The contract with HNTB will run through 2030, according to an airport spokesperson. The airport staff says the i...Country star Jake Owen to perform at the Vermont State Fair

After 20 years in Larimer Square, Ted’s Montana Grill has closed its saloon doors.Kristie Mansur, the director of operations at Ted’s Montana Grill in Larimer Square, said the Ohio-based chain was not able to reach an extended lease agreement with its landlord, North Carolina-based Asana Partners, which purchased the Denver landmark property for $92.49 million in 2020.“We were looking for a long-term lease at a rent that we felt was fair, and they were not able to offer that to us,” Mansur said. “That was a flagship location for us, so it was with very heavy hearts that we had to make this decision.”Ted’s Montana Grill, which opened at 1401 Larimer St. in 2003, had its last day of service on May 15.“The building was very authentic to our brand. It actually was a turn-of-the-century saloon, and our restaurants are fashioned out of Montana, turn-of-the-century saloons,” Mansur said. We would have loved to continue to operate on Larimer Square.”Related ArticlesRestaurants, Food and Dri...Editorial: Denver needs “killer instinct” to keep the Broncos on historic Mile High land

The anecdote goes that Stan Kroenke visited the 289-acre future home of the SOFI stadium in California, fell in love with the Hollywood Park setting, and set in motion a $5 billion investment to create a modern marvel of a stadium serving two NFL football teams and a money-making redevelopment of surrounding land he scooped up.As the Los Angeles Times reported in a detailed retrospective of how SOFI came to be, the competitors for the stadium – a proposal in Carson and one in downtown Los Angeles – lacked the “killer instinct” and lost out to Kroenke’s vision in Inglewood.Perhaps that same killer instinct was missing in Oakland when the city lost the Raiders to a heavily taxpayer-funded stadium in Las Vegas, the Oakland A’s to Las Vegas where lawmakers could vote this week on a $400 million gift for a stadium on the Strip, and the Warriors to the $1 billion Chase Center in San Francisco.Denverites must dig deep — from the new mayor and city council all the way to the bar...Mountainfilm in Telluride wants Denverites to join 45th annual documentary festival

Telluride’s Mountainfilm festival will celebrate a milestone 45th anniversary this Memorial Day weekend, showcasing more than 100 documentary features and short films alongside talks and workshops led by their creators and stars.According to festival director Suzan Beraza, programming has finally rebounded after transitioning to a virtual festival experience in 2020 and managing a limited capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions in 2021. But even as the festival’s offerings have returned to pre-pandemic levels, ticket sales so far have not.“We’ve been sold out in recent years prior to COVID, but not this year,” she said. “I’ve been so curious about that.”This trend is hardly unique to the festival. Movie-going tanked in 2020 due the COVID-19 pandemic and is recently on the rise, but box office revenues are still well below 2019, according to Variety.Beraza suspects the cost of travel to and lodging in Telluride may be deterring some regulars from flying in, but she hopes folks fr...Latest news
