Wash Park French eatery making way for something “a little more fun”

A French restaurant in West Wash Park has closed its doors, but its ownership plans to debut a new concept in the space this spring.Jared Leonard, owner of Au Feu Brasserie at 81 S. Pennsylvania St., told BusinessDen the restaurant’s fine-dining nature just wasn’t working.“The amount of time and food costs in fine dining, it’s just a format that’s kind of dying out,” Leonard said. “It’s hard to do in the current economy.”Leonard opened Au Feu in January 2021, after the restaurant had a short stint in RiNo’s Zeppelin Station food hall. Before that, he’d operated Budlong Hot Chicken in the Pennsylvania Street space.Au Feu offered small plates such as poutine and grilled oysters in the $12 to $25 range, according to a menu still posted on the window. Entrees ranged from $17 for fried chicken to $30 for steak frites.Leonard said he’s pivoting to launch a French cocktail bar in the space.“It will be more of a cocktail bar with small plates, instead of a full-service restaurant with cockt...Heartburn in Golden: Food hall operators accuse partner of conflict of interest

Denver chef Jesus Silva, who started his restaurant career at 11 in his home country of Mexico, has won respect and recognition for his work and creative food concepts from the Denver Central Market to the Stanley Marketplace and Milepost Zero in McGregor Square.Silva, like many of his peers, struggled when COVID-19 hit. One venture closed at the height of the pandemic, but he opened stalls at the Milepost Zero food hall and helped open the Golden Mill food hall in Golden. Then legal troubles hit. The legal dispute has spawned accusations of conflicts of interest, intimidation and bullying tactics. Silva said it has left the fate of his business and his more than 30 employees at Golden Mill up in the air.“The worst thing we ever experienced in the industry was COVID,” Silva said. “I would think after COVID, nothing can be worse. And now I’m dealing with this. Oh my god, this is never going to end.”By “this,” he means strife between him and hi...Movie review: “Luther: The Fallen Sun” a grander, but sillier version of show

Idris Elba’s John Luther finally has made it to the big screen. And sure, many — at least on these shores — will watch “Luther: The Fallen Sun” in their living rooms, but that doesn’t change the fact that this cinematic offshoot of the British drama series “Luther” feels theater-worthy.Already in a cineplex here and there, it arrives on Netflix this week.It does so as a bigger, bolder and, unfortunately, increasingly over-the-top version of the show.Created and penned by Neil Cross, the series revolves around its namesake, a detective chief inspector in London. Obsessive about catching killers to the point where he’s willing to blur some moral and ethical lines, DCI Luther found himself in a lot of legal hot water at the conclusion of the show’s fifth season — or “series” in Brit speak — in 2019.In its opening moments, “The Fallen Sun” takes us back in time slightly, to a bit of extortion that leads to a spot on a road that quickly becomes a crime scene. It soon is visited by Luther,...Cars trapped by rain-fueled mudslides in Baldwin Hills

Multiple mudslides in Baldwin Hills snarled traffic and trapped vehicles late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning as yet another storm hit Southern California. The mudslides impacted multiple areas, including traffic on La Brea Avenue, footage from the scene showed.Perhaps the largest incident occurred at about 2 a.m. Wednesday on La Brea just north of Don Lorenzo Drive, where all northbound traffic had to be halted, but not before vehicles were caught in the debris. At least two cars were caught in the mud, and tow crews had to be brought out to help remove the vehicles.Another mudslide affected the 5200 block of El Mirador Drive just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. In this instance, debris flowed from the back of a property facing Punta Alta Drive. The rainPresale Codes for Clutch No Stars Above Tour with Dinosaur Jr. and Red Fang

At the close of the regular season, the 49ers all but said goodbye to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, tackle Mike McGlinchey, defensive back Jimmie Ward and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair.All have reportedly agreed to terms with other teams during the negotiating period and can officially sign contracts Wednesday at the start of the new league year — Garoppolo with the Las Vegas Raiders, McGlinchey with the Denver Broncos while Ward joins former defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans in Houston and Al-Shaair heads to Tennessee. Those losses were factored in by coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch to the cost of doing business under the salary cap.Two more players — cornerback Emmanuel Moseley (Detroit) and defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway (Houston) will also depart, with Moseley being a mild surprise coming off an ACL tear in Week 5.An important piece of the offensive line was brought back in center Jake Brendel, while others scheduled for free agency who re-upped were...Editorial: SVB failure adds to tech industry’s greedy image

Day by day, month by month, year by year, greed is ruining the tech industry’s image. This time it was tech’s response to the failure of its primary financial institution, Silicon Valley Bank. When it comes to privacy, child internet protections, curbing misinformation or, now, protecting our banking system, tech companies repeatedly put profit before the public good. The federal government bailed out tech this time, but the public’s patience with the industry is running thin, threatening its future.Silicon Valley Bank was a niche institution catering to financing for the tech industry. Two weeks before its collapse, the bank’s CEO, Greg Becker, reportedly sold $3.6 million in company shares. That’s right. Becker apparently made sure he got his money knowing the potential that others could be caught holding the bag.It was Becker who helped bring about the crisis. In 2015, he pleaded with Congress to weaken the Dodd-Frank Act regulations, created after the...A closer look at the Warriors’ embarrassing road record and how they can turn it around

The vibes are buzzing when the Warriors play at home. A 29-7 record at Chase Center buoys their playoff hopes and the invigorating home win streaks inspire talk of the Warriors finally turning a corner. But the road Warriors are nothing like the home Warriors. Those big scoring games that lift them at home can’t plaster over poor defensive communication that completely falls apart when Golden State is on the road. Those defensive lapses are the primary reason for the Warriors’ 7-26 road record. Though not the worst road record in the NBA — the Spurs (6-27) and Rockets (6-28) have them beat for futility — but they definitely own the worst road record among playoff contenders. In fact, the Warriors are on pace to own one of the worst road records for a playoff team in modern NBA history. The 1987-88 San Antonio Spurs and 1985-86 Chicago Bulls made the playoffs finishing with identical 8-33 road records, the worst in last 50 years, according to Associated Press. Published Wed, 27 Nov 2024 08:44:13 GMT
The Santa Clara Broncos are having one of the best seasons in school history and were a slam dunk to be picked to play in the National Invitation Tournament. But playing Wednesday night’s NIT opener at the Leavy Center was a nice twist for the Broncos.Unlike the NCAA Tournament, which is played at neutral sites, the NIT’s top 16 seeds have the opportunity to play at home right up until the Final Four — this year in Las Vegas instead of Madison Square Garden, where it had been held since 1938.The Broncos drew No. 3 seed Sam Houston State, but aren’t playing in Huntsville, Texas, because of a scheduling quirk. Not a basketball schedule, but an academic one.Sam Houston State is on spring break this week and declined to host the first-round game. Bearkats athletic director Bobby Williams said in a statement that without the students and staff on campus they “would not have been able to meet the standards required to host an opening-round game or create an a...Latest news
