Angie Leventis Lourgos, Vivian La | Chicago Tribune (TNS)Northwestern University’s anti-hazing policies and prevention tools are extensive, including an online hazing education course all incoming undergraduates are required to complete during their first term of enrollment.Despite these measures, an investigation of hazing by university football players recently revealed a toxic team culture that persisted for years, unchecked. At least 11 current or former football student-athletes “acknowledged that hazing has been ongoing within the football program,” including “nudity and sexualized acts of a degrading nature” that team members were forced to participate in, according to a university statement released Monday. In a letter to administrators, a half-dozen professors called for greater transparency of the investigation’s findings and more accountability of the athletic department, as well as university support for students who endured hazing or trauma.“We see these students in our ...Oakley sells prime property for future retail/housing development

The city of Oakley has agreed to sell a prime downtown city parcel to a contractor who wants to develop retail and housing there. The council on Tuesday approved the sale to R&R Pacific Construction. The Woodland company is also developing a nearby Mercantile Shopping Center on Main Street.“It was originally planned for additional parking, but we saw a development opportunity here,” McMurray said. The company’s proposal includes a mix of mixed-use commercial and retail on the lower level and residential housing on the upper level. SANDUSKY, Ohio (AP) — A Michigan woman struck in the head by a metal bracket that fell off a roller coaster at an Ohio amusement park has sued the park and its parent company, alleging their negligence caused the accident that left her with traumatic brain injuries. The August 2021 accident occurred as the then-44-year-old woman was waiting in line to ride the 420-foot (128-meter) tall Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky. At the time, it was world’s second-tallest roller coaster.A state investigation found no evidence that Cedar Point acted illegally or had reason to believe the ride was unsafe, and no sanctions were brought. The ride has remained shuttered since the accident occurred. The suit seeks undisclosed compensatory damages for the woman, her father — who was in line with her when she was hit — and her husband. The woman’s medical expenses have exceeded $2 million and are expected to reach more than $10 million because of additional treatments ...Amazon said it had its biggest Prime day event ever this year

NEW YORK (AP) — Amazon said Thursday it had its biggest Prime day event ever this year. The e-commerce company, as in past years, did not reveal how much money it earned during the two-day sales event, which took place on Tuesday and Wednesday and offered a plethora of deals on electronics, home goods and other items. But Amazon touted 375 million items that it says were purchased worldwide by Prime members, who pay $14.99 per month or $139 per year, for different perks including faster shipping. It also said sales growth for independent sellers on Amazon outpaced the company’s retail business during the discount event. “The first day of Prime Day was the largest sales day in Amazon’s history, and Prime members saved more this year than any other Prime Day event,” Doug Herrington, an Amazon executive who oversees the company’s online and mobile shopping, said in a prepared statement. WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Europe’s top court ruled on Thursday that the suspension in Poland of a judge who had criticized the government is against the EU’s law and he should be returned to the bench with full pay. The decision was the latest in a string of European Union decisions ordering Poland’s right-wing government to roll back changes to the judiciary that the EU says are in violation of the rule of law.Judge Igor Tuleya was suspended in 2020 and had his pay reduced by a judicial disciplinary chamber of the Supreme Court, a body created and controlled by the government. The body had been also used against other judges who had defended judicial independence under the Law and Justice party government, which has been in power since 2015. Tuleya reacted by saying that Thursday’s ruling was “some sort of success and a nice surprise.”It was a “battle won, but the war for the rule of law — against the declarations of the ruling party members — is still goi...Latest news
