Red Sox bats go cold against A’s rookie Luis Medina in chaotic 3-0 loss Wednesday night at the Coliseum began with a bang and ended with a whimper, as the 51-45 Red Sox fell to the 26-71 Oakland A’s, 3-0.The game devolved into chaos almost immediately. After reaching on a triple in the bottom of the first, Tony Kemp attempted to steal home, and got called out due to running too far from the base line. Oakland manager Mark Kotsay protested too much and found himself ejected.Joe Jacques was lucky to escape the first inning. Not so much in the second, as the A’s, who entered the day with the 5th-fewest home runs in the Majors, took a 3-0 lead on a pair of home runs by Ryan Noda and JJ Bleday (with a runner on base).“Didn’t get Strike 1 on a lot of guys, kind of fell behind, and both the homers were 2-strike pitches just left down the middle. And you know, if you leave it there, it’s gonna get punished,” Jacques told reporters. “Just gotta clean it up.”Though Jacques started sporadically in college and the min...

Delicious Thai Lamb Satay made easy

Delicious Thai Lamb Satay made easy I love lamb satay with a spicy peanut sauce but didn’t want to take the time to make my own sauce. So I was delighted to find a bottle of the sauce at the market. This meant that I could make the satay with very little effort. The lamb only cooks for about 10 minutes on two skewers. Tender lamb cubes cut from the leg of lamb are perfect for this recipe. If you use other cuts of lamb, let them marinate for about 5 minutes longer.Tip for making a satay or kebab: Leave about 1 inch between each lamb cube on the skewer so the heat can reach all sides of the meat.Helpful Hints:In case you prefer to make your own peanut sauce, I’ve given a recipe below. You can make the lamb on a stovetop grill or under a broiler. If using a broiler, place the skewers on a sheet pan.TAG GOES HEREThai Lamb SatayINGREDIENTS1 teaspoon canola oil1 tablespoon rice vinegar1 garlic clove bruised3/4 pound lamb cubes cut from the leg1 1/2 cups microwave brown rice4 cups romaine leaves, torn into bite size pieces1 c...

Lowry: U.S. military doesn’t need DEI programs

Lowry: U.S. military doesn’t need DEI programs House Republicans voted to end diversity, equity and inclusion programs and personnel at the Pentagon, and one wonders whether the U.S. military will ever be the same. The provision was one of a number of anti-“woke” measures in the House-passed National Defense Authorization Act that have occasioned sputtering outrage.According to National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, there’s no way that President Joe Biden would ever sign such legislation “that would put our troops at greater risk or put our readiness at risk.”America’s leaders used to worry that we wouldn’t have enough stopping power to defend against Soviet tanks potentially pouring through the Fulda Gap or a survivable nuclear force in the event of a nuclear first strike; now they worry servicemembers might not be learning enough about microaggressions.Last year, Bishop Garrison, serving at the time as the senior advisor to the Secretary of Defense for human capital and diversi...

Moore: Democrats throwing kids off the school bus

Moore: Democrats throwing kids off the school bus  Have you heard the outrageous story of what happened recently in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s capital? Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-Pa.), elected in 2022, had campaigned on school choice for tens of thousands of children, mostly minorities, who are forced to attend failing public schools in places like Philadelphia.“It’s what I believe,” Shapiro, then state attorney general, assured voters as he ran for governor. Last month on a national Fox News broadcast, Shapiro was unequivocal in his support for school choice because “every child of God” deserves “a quality education.”But there’s a force far more powerful in politics than Shapiro’s convictions, such as they are. And that force is the teachers unions. They put on a full-court press to stop the roughly 10,000 vouchers for the poorest kids in Pennsylvania’s worst school districts even though the state budget bill gave billions more for the public schools. It didn’t...

Steidler: Keep the Postal Service out of the booze business

Steidler: Keep the Postal Service out of the booze business The Postal Service is facing formidable challenges, and there are plenty of bad ideas to fix it. At the top of the list is legislation in the House of Representatives to allow the service to deliver beer, wine and spirits to homes. This new “service” will do nothing to fix the service’s finances and will result in a host of liabilities and added costs. It is far from clear that the service even supports this legislation. One special interest that will benefit from the measure is the members of Congress who represent alcohol producers and have introduced the bill. The Postal Service should ask that the legislation be tabled. Otherwise, tech-savvy, rabble-rousing teenagers, particularly those at home while Mom and Dad are at work, will have vastly increased opportunities to create mischief with severe consequences.America’s mental health crisis is especially punishing for the young. One indication is the large number of deaths and related calamities from alcohol abuse. The National Insti...

Editorial: U.S. presidential race needs new blood President Biden announced his choice of headquarters for his 2024 re-election campaign Tuesday, and it’s not a good look.Biden will be working from home, running his campaign from his Wilmington, Del. residence.Biden picked Philadelphia as HQ for his 2020 campaign, but the pandemic saw him spending a lot of time at his Wilmington digs. The pandemic is over, and yet the president is staying put.He put a great spin on it: “My family’s values, my eternal optimism and my unwavering belief in the American middle class as our nation’s backbone comes from my home — from Delaware,” Biden said in a statement. “That’s why there is no better place for our reelection campaign to have its headquarters,” Politico reported.Perhaps his basement represents the country’s strong foundation. It’s hard not to see the hand of his White House team at play here: a literal home base means fewer opportunities to take a header up the stairs of Air Force One, or stumble over a sandbag, or othe...

‘Devastating’: 4-year-old boy killed in Boston’s Hyde Park neighborhood hit-and-run A 4-year-old boy was struck and killed in a hit-and-run in Hyde Park Tuesday night.“On a warm, summer day, this is just a horrible tragedy that has taken place,” Mayor Michelle Wu, her voice clearly wavering with the weight of the moment, said during a press conference at the scene at around 11:40 p.m. “We urge everyone just to be vigilant, whether you are driving, whether you’re out and about, of how much can change in just a split second.”Boston Police Superintendent Gregory Long said the child was in the area of 165 Wood Ave., near the intersection with Tacoma Street, at around 9:30 p.m. “when the suspect motor vehicle struck him, did not stop, and fled the area.”An off-duty Boston firefighter ran to the boy’s body and did all he could to render first aid before Boston EMS arrived and then transported him to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Long said. Police were canvassing the area for any possible witnesses or security footage that could provide investigator...

‘Barbie’ & ‘Oppenheimer’ go head to head at the box office

‘Barbie’ & ‘Oppenheimer’ go head to head at the box office This weekend pits a doll turned improbable movie star opposite an epic three-hour deadly serious biography of the scientist who created the atom bomb.  With little in common, both pictures – “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” — are expected to be hits. Both features boast all-star casts. But for “Oppenheimer,” despite having A-listers like Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and Robert Downey, Jr., the biggest “star” is its British writer-director Christopher Nolan who remains most famous for his Batman trilogy with Christian Bale and another  Oscar-nominated historical piece “Dunkirk.”Nolan’s well-known passion for telling this complex story accurately and in such detail easily marks “Oppenheimer” – played with an uncanny resemblance by Ireland’s Cillian Murphy – as this summer’s most serious moviegoing alternative. That it arrives as a global release from Universal Pictures is a story in itself:  Nolan had always been supported through his Hollywood career by Warner Bros.  Until the pandemic arriv...

Dear Abby: She says ‘not tonight,’ he flies into a rage Dear Abby: I’m a 37-year-old stay-at-home mother of two teens. I’ve been in a relationship with a guy I’ll call “Doug” for four years. I feel he only wants me here for sex. If I say no, he either tries to force it or verbally abuses me.He tells me if I don’t give him sex, I need to leave so he can bring another woman to do it. He will destroy my belongings or call me names. He says it’s my fault that he does that to me. I’m not sure what to do here. Is it my fault? — Bad Scene in the MidwestDear Bad Scene: When a boyfriend (or husband for that matter) forces their partner to have sex, it isn’t foreplay; it is RAPE. That Doug emotionally abuses you or destroys your property if you refuse to accommodate him is not your “fault.” (“You MADE me do it” is something abusers say when they want to avoid taking responsibility for their actions.)What you need to do now is get out of there as safely as you can. ...
