(NEXSTAR) – Thanksgiving 2023 is already shaping up to be an especially frustrating one for lots of Americans, and that’s before they find out the stuffing has raisins in it.This year, AAA predicts that approximately 55.4 million Americans will be traveling at least 50 miles to get to Thanksgiving dinner, the vast majority of whom — 49.13 million — will be taking the journey by car, according to the organization's latest projections. That would make it the busiest Thanksgiving travel season since 2019, and the third-busiest (after 2005 and 2019) since AAA started posting its forecasts in 2000. Pedestrian deaths are spiking across the country: Why? With millions of motorists sharing the country’s busiest travel corridors in the days around Thanksgiving, it’s inevitable that many will get stuck in traffic for at least a portion of the trip. But drivers can reduce their chances of frustrating delays with a bit of forethought and flexibility, according to AAA.AAA used data from INRIX,...

Growing pains at Ibram X. Kendi’s antiracist center don’t signal a larger trend, experts say

The award-winning author and academic Ibram X. Kendi has been a lightning rod for public discourse since publishing his book “How to Be an Antiracist” in 2019. But in September, the praise and criticism reached new intensity when Boston University acknowledged layoffs at the center he runs there along with a change to its operating model. The news prompted former colleagues and current collaborators to publicly question the BU Center for Antiracist Research’s ability to deliver on the promises it had made to funders. In news reports and op-eds, some former colleagues said too much power was concentrated in Kendi’s hands. People and organizations that oppose racial equity piled on. Earlier this month, the university said an initial inquiry found no issues with how the center managed its finances. Acknowledging the layoffs in September, the university and Kendi said it was not financially sustainable to conduct research and develop programs with its own employees, despite having...

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Miami rookie running back De’Von Achane returned to practice Monday after missing the past four games with a knee injury, opening his 21-day window to be activated from injured reserve.Achane hasn’t played since hurting his knee late in a Week 5 win over the New York Giants.Coach Mike McDaniel said Achane didn’t tear anything in his knee; it was more of a sprain that could have been managed with a brace, but the team thought it was best to place him on injured reserve to allow it to heal fully.“I just didn’t really envision him being one that would really flourish with a brace,” McDaniel said Monday.“We took the time to make sure that we could get structurally completely strong. We erred on the side of caution with that, but everything seems to be ready to go for today’s practice.”McDaniel did not say if Achane will play when the Dolphins host the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. Miami (6-3) is coming off a bye week and is currently fir...

WARSAW — Almost a month after the election that defeated the Law and Justice (PiS) party, Poland’s parliament held its inaugural session and voted in a new leadership showing that power has decisively shifted away from the old ruling party. The parliament now has a new speaker, former TV host Szymon Hołownia, who was elected with the support of 265 deputies while the PiS candidate, Elżbieta Witek, received only 193 votes in the 460-member parliament. In his first speech as speaker, a powerful position directing the work of the parliament, Hołownia promised a decisive break with the practices of Law and Justice, in power since 2015.“Politics isn’t violence. We are going to build a parliament of respect,” Hołownia said.In a symbol of the new changes, the police barriers that had prevented the public from accessing the parliament buildings were removed — opening up the area for the first time in years. He also promised to make the parliament more accessible to journalists, whose ab...
