A few gripes, plus gratitude for a Bay Area transportation department: Roadshow

Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 23:37:46 GMT

Q: I have a few gripes.1. According to the California driver’s manual, cars must have a front license plate. Occasionally I keep count and about 10% of cars do not have a front plate. It goes up to about 15% in Los Altos. It’s more than 60% for Teslas.2. For cars with a rear bicycle rack that hides the rear license plate: If they also lack a front license plate, they’re immune to bridge tolls.3. Some intersections have pedestrian crossing signals with three red lights that cycle when a pedestrian pushes a button to cross. When no pedestrian is crossing, all three lights are out, making it indistinguishable from an inoperative signal. But the California driver’s manual says that if a traffic signal is not operating, it should be interpreted as requiring a full stop.Dave Grossman, Palo AltoA: The stats you provide about no front plates are higher than I expected. And you’re correct that intersections where lights are not operating require a full stop.Q: Last Ju...

‘Miracle’ water year in California: Rain, snow put state’s reservoirs at 128% of historical average

Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 23:37:46 GMT

By ADAM BEAM | Associated PressSACRAMENTO  — California ended its “miracle” water year on Saturday with enough rain and snow to fill the state’s reservoirs to 128% of their historical average, making it among the wettest years in recorded state history. That’s a welcome boon to a state that has spent much of the past dozen years in a deep drought, forcing state leaders to grapple with how the state should share and manage its water in the future. A series of winter storms in early 2023 busted the state’s most recent dry spell.State officials measured 33.56 inches (85.2 centimeters) of precipitation through the end of September. California’s “water year” begins annually on Oct. 1 so it can include all of the fall and winter months when California gets the bulk of its rain and snow. The state depends on those wet months to fill its reservoirs that supply water for drinking, farming and environmental uses throughout the state. The Oroville Dam, top right, holds back water at Lake Orovill...

Prince George’s Co. schools working on short and long-term solutions to bus issues

Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 23:37:46 GMT

More than a month into the school year, Prince George’s County Public Schools in Maryland is still short about 200 bus drivers. It means lots of students spend time waiting for buses to pick them up in the morning and take them home in the afternoon — if the buses even come at all.During a briefing before the county council committee that oversees education issues, Superintendent Millard House and his team went over the short and long-term solutions aimed at addressing those problems. In the short term, the county is working to improve communication by texting, emailing and even calling parents if their child’s bus will be significantly delayed. The county is using contact information provided through the SchoolMAX portal to reach out to those who might be affected on any given day.In addition, some bus routes that don’t necessarily see a lot of kids riding at any given time — such as special education students and situations that require transportation to specializ...

Don’t expect EU sanctions on Azerbaijan — even though MEPs will vote for them

Published Tue, 18 Feb 2025 23:37:46 GMT

STRASBOURG — The European Parliament is expected to call for sanctions against Azerbaijan on Thursday over the seizure of the ethnic Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh last month, but Baku’s long lobbying reach in Europe and its crucial gas reserves mean EU countries will probably ignore the MEPs’ demand. Azerbaijan launched a lightning strike into the breakaway territory in September, forcing 100,000 people to flee. The crisis has exposed a deep division over Europe’s attitude to the two parties. While European politicians are often willing to take Armenia’s side in symbolic appeals and expressions of concern, Azerbaijan has established more hard power, not least because the EU is increasingly turning to Caspian Sea gas as an alternative to Russia after the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine. The situation “looks like it did with Ukraine,” said Nathalie Loiseau, a French lawmaker from the centrist Renew group and chair of the Parliament’s def...
