LONDON (AP) — British filmmaker Terence Davies, best known for a pair of powerful, lyrical movies inspired by his childhood in postwar Liverpool, has died at the age of 77.Davies’ manager John Taylor said the director died “peacefully at home in his sleep” on Saturday after a short illness.Raised in a large working-class Roman Catholic family in the English port city, Davies worked as a clerk in a shipping office and a bookkeeper in an accountancy firm before enrolling at a drama school in the city of Coventry and later the National Film School.After making several short films, Davies made his feature debut as writer-director in 1988 with “Distant Voices, Still Lives,” a dreamlike — sometimes nightmarish — collage of a film that evoked a childhood of poverty and violence leavened by music and movie magic. Ingredients: 1 head of broccoli2 Tbs. parmesan cheese-grated1/3 cup olive oil1 Tsp. garlic powderMethod of Preparation: Preheat oven to 425 degrees.Boil a pot of water and throw in your broccoli. Cook for about four minutes. The broccoli should be crisp but easy to smash on a baking sheet. Drain and cut into florets. Place broccoli florets on a parchment-lined baking sheet and smash down with a sturdy glass or a rolling pin.Combine the olive oil, garlic powder and parmesan cheese and blend well. Brush the mixture over the broccoli florets. (CNN) — More than 2,000 people have died after a powerful earthquake struck western Afghanistan, the Taliban said Sunday, as the nation reels from another quake at a time of deep economic crisis.The 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck on Saturday 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of Herat city in the western Herat province – the third largest in Afghanistan.Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mojahid put the number killed at 2,053 people, with more 1,240 people hurt and 1,320 houses completely or partially destroyed.
