Missouri's longest tunnel transformed into a tourist destination (Photo courtesy: iStock/Getty Images)MISSOURI (KSNF/KODE) — Many people associate tunnels with vehicle traffic, but the longest underground trail in the Show-Me State is actually associated with trains. The Vale Tunnel in Kansas City served the Missouri Central Railroad, which carried passengers across the state, from Saint Louis to Kansas City, and back again, since it first opened in 1904.The 441ft long tunnel travels under Bannister Road — one of the busier east-west routes in the Kansas City Metro. Over the years, this rails-to-trails tunnel has had many different names, including the Vale Tunnel, the CRI-and-P Tunnel, and the Valley of Vale Tunnel. The underground section of this railway saw its last train pass through in 1980, shortly after the Rock Island Railroad declared bankruptcy. That's when the tunnel and the rail line traversing the tunnel were left abandoned.| You’ll Spend Half A Day Traveling This Missouri Highway >After several decades of abandonment, leading to v...

Collared black bear tracked to Leo Carrillo Beach, where paw prints found in sand A black bear at the beach? That’s what National Park Service officials said happened with a collared black bear recently.BB-12, a 3-to-4-year-old male bear captured and collared on April 23, was tracked by GPS and bear paw prints were seen near Leo Carrillo State Beach, officials said. “Have you ever seen a black bear take a midnight stroll along the beach? We haven’t either but we know that it happened recently and at least twice in Malibu,” Santa Monica Mountain National Recreation Area officials wrote on Facebook. “Beach life seemingly did not suit Santa Monica Mountain’s erstwhile resident black bear, BB-12, however.”Since being collared, BB-12 apparently has also crossed the 101, 23 and 118 freeways, and is currently roaming the northern part of the Santa Susana Mountains, officials said. His capture was the first time biologists caught and radio collared a bear in the Santa Monica Mountains. The nearest population of black bears can be found in the Santa Susana Mountains north ...
