LOS ANGELES - The St. Louis Cardinals started the offseason as one of the more aggressive teams in the free agent market. But in recent weeks, the Los Angeles Dodgers have emerged as the big spenders and winners of arguably the two best-available talents this winter. Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto join a star-studded Dodgers squad on record deals. Los Angeles will host the Cardinals on Opening Day next year. There's a good chance both will make their new-team debuts against St. Louis. Ohtani, a rare modern baseball hitting-pitching phenom and two-time MVP, officially signed a 10-year, $700 million deal with the Dodgers last week. It's the first contract to exceed half a billion dollars in MLB history and at least double the dollars of every other player not named Mike Trout, Aaron Judge or Mookie Betts.Ohtani stays in Los Angeles after six seasons with the American League's Angels, coming off arguably his best MLB campaign yet. During his age-28 season, shortened a few weeks b...Snowy roads forecast for Colorado drivers through Christmas Eve

There’s a good chance Colorado drivers traveling for Christmas will encounter slick roads this weekend, with snow forecasts ranging from a few inches along the Front Range to more than 18 inches in the southern mountains, according to the National Weather Service.Colorado Department of Transportation road crews are expecting traffic levels similar to a normal winter weekend, said spokesperson Jared Fiel, and are planning to be out on the roads through Sunday.“It’s looking like it’s going to be hitting the southern mountains a little bit more, and up around here it’s looking like a relatively normal winter storm – but we haven’t had a lot of those this year, so we will take whatever snow they can give us,” Fiel said. There’s typically very little traffic on Christmas Day, Fiel said, and CDOT staggers crew schedules so that everyone has time at home with their family on the holiday.A traffic forecast from the Interstate 70 Coalition advises drivers to expect congestion on westbound I-7...Christmas foods your dog can eat and which ones to avoid

Back in September, Assemblyman Evan Low of San Jose and eight other state lawmakers asked the Attorney General to determine whether the U.S. Constitution’s Fourteenth Amendment bars former President Donald Trump from the ballot for having “engaged in insurrection.”It seemed nothing might ever come of it, as months went by with no word back and the clock ticking toward the state’s March 5 primary. Now this week’s bombshell ruling from Colorado’s highest court, barring Trump from the ballot in the Rocky Mountain State, has renewed the possibility in other states, including California. At least three lawsuits to keep Trump off the ballot are pending in the Golden State, along with calls from California’s Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis this week for the Secretary of State to “explore every legal option” to remove the former president and earlier requests from Low and his fellow state lawmakers.“Our goal was to get this to the courts ...What Mitty girls basketball star is saying after upsetting nation’s No. 1 team

With ESPN’s cameras rolling and Mitty down by three points in the fourth quarter of the Nike Tournament of Champions title on the line, sophomore McKenna Woliczko did what great players do.She made game-changing plays in Mitty’s thrilling 73-72 victory over top-ranked Long Island Lutheran. The game’s MVP and 2022-23 Bay Area News Group player of the year dropped in two layups and swished a pair of midrange jumpers to score eight of her team-high 22 points. In the team’s first close game of the season, Woliczko displayed the poise of a senior. “During every game, I get nervous, but there was just something about this championship game, that I just felt like I was ready,” Woliczko told the Bay Area News Group after getting back to the Bay Area on Friday afternoon.Woliczko wasn’t a one-person band, of course. UConn commit Morgan Cheli scored 17 points, made the game-winning free throws and had 10 assists. Many of those passes went to Woliczko, who knew how to get open for her five-star ...Danville Brewing Co. plans expansion to Pleasanton

When San Jose detectives were called to a South Bay hospital in early April to investigate the death of a 2-month-old boy, they faced an uncomfortable twist. The child’s mother, Yuqi Yan, had an active warrant for her arrest after she allegedly skipped out on a felony court date a couple months earlier. And confronted with the prospect of jailing her that evening, the detectives decided to let her remain free. Now, San Jose police are seeking Yan on a new warrant filed this week — one accusing the woman of murdering her infant son, Charles Zheng. It follows a determination by Santa Clara’s medical examiner on Dec. 8 that the boy’s death was a homicide, citing how the child endured “repeated abuse and neglect” and died of the “combined effects of blunt force injuries of head, severe malnourishment and dehydration.”The search for Yan, 29, comes amid rampant speculation on Chinese social media accounts in recent months about whether the wom...Bay Area holiday weekend weather forecast: Dry before rain returns next week
